I have run the Superchip in my truck for a long time, and I was impressed with the tuner. I now have a DP-TUNER and I can't believe the difference. You need to have the supprting mods to run the DP, but it's worth it.
I have always heard that stacking in these trucks don't do a whole lot a good. Mainly higher EGTs. I agree with JD. Send your TS to Tony Wildman to get his tunes. Thats what I am gonna do when I get the money.
i would get tonys tunes also. i had the normal ts and it was ok and then i had tony burn it and now it rocks and also took my tranny out but thats not his fault for making it fun lol gook luck with the decision
I'm also running a TS with Tony's Tunes. Don't even think about it -- sell the Edge and use that money to have Tony re-burn the TS. That's what I did with my DP, and I'm quite happy with it...
I didn't sell the DP because I was unhappy with it, before someone jumps my case. It was only because Tony is practically my neighbor and does free re-burns...
BTW, I don't think you can stack those. What will happen is the Edge will program your PCM, then the TS will just override whatever's in it. There was a good thread a while back about how these work, but I don't have time right now to go find it -- maybe someone else will dig it up...
The Edge-EZ is an ICP fooler. (ICP=Injection Control Pressure)
The TS chip already has ICP tuning as part of what's written in each setting.
Basically what the Edge unit does is fool the PCM into thinking the ICP is too low. So in response, the PCM bumps up the ICP to what it thinks is the "normal" level. Since the TS chip already programs for higher ICP, bumping it up more with a fooler like the Edge unit won't really get you any extra power. The reason is the stock HPOP on these trucks can only flow so much oil (7.2cc's per revolution for the 99.5+ HPOP's, and 6.8cc's per rev on the early 99s). When the chip is calling for more fuel, more oil is required to push that extra fuel. On top of that, the chip typically calls for higher ICP pressure to better atomize the fuel at the injection event. So now the stock HPOP is either barely keeping up, or it's past the capacity that it can deliver. Adding an ICP fooler to try to deliver more oil........ well you see where this is going. It's not going to happen if the HPOP has no more oil it can deliver.
It's also best to leave it up to the chip to control ICP, instead of putting in a fooler. The reason is that the ICP tables are usually matched with the amount of fuel delivered for each setting. Adding an ICP fooler changes that, and it can affect EGT's typically on the lower settings (tow settings), and at low speed/low load situations. It can also affect idle if the chip is programmed for higher ICP at idle (DP-Tuner does that).
So if you haven't bought the Edge EZ yet, don't bother. If you have..... probably a good idea to sell it and spend the money on something else that will deliver better performance gains.
As for the TS chip, it's up to you. Many people have run TS for a while now and have no issues. I've ridden in a truck that had a TS chip, and the only complaint the owner had was shifting. But then again, each tuner programs shifting differently, so it's all about personal tastes. Some people prefer the shift strategy that the TS chip calls for. I say that if you are happy with the TS chip, keep it. If not, then look at other options that have already been suggested in the posts above mine.
Thx for all the feedback. Pocket, that is what i was looking for. I have the TS installed, and had the Edge sitting around too. I ran the edge for a while, and the truck went from 15.4 mpg to 18.2 (trans felt soft shifting) I've been running the TS for a while, and it has much better power and shifting, but was suprised the mpg is right around 16. This is all with my wife driving, so not so heavy of a foot. What about getting a Wildman program? How does it compare to the TS programs? Thx.
