Why not get the best of both worlds and buy a ford with a 5.4L and then have a Cummins swapped in. You could buy a used cummins(engine alone) and have it completely machined and overhauled and then have it slapped in there. It would probably end up costing only a little more than if you just bought a new 6.4L. Then your only problem is the warranty.

LOL really that simple huh!

You do realize that on modern vehicles the computer controls EVERYTHING, from transmission shifting to the gauges, climate controls even the windows rolling up and down.

Please I would like to know how you fool the computer into believing a cummins is a 5.4 gasser., because if you don't do just that you have nothing more than an immobile collection of parts

The days of swapping in whatever motor you want just because it'll fit are long long gone.

Back to the original question, In this economy I wouldn't buy anything that required a payment.

if you actually read the fine print it gives a good overview of just how complex these swaps are even on an almost 10yr old super duty.

Cummins in a new 5.4 truck with no aftermarket wiring and ecu reprogramme support.......it ain't gonna happen

Technology wize especially as related to engine management a 10yr old truck is about as far removed from a 09 model as a 99 is from an 79

Lots of people have enough money not to care, and they help keep the used market full of stuff for the rest of us. It's a good time to cut a deal, but when Christmas gets close it'll be better.

I think with the 09 Rams coming out, from strictly a $$ standpoint, buying a 08 Dodge will be less expensive. But you get what you pay for. Remember the 6.7L CTD is nearly as new as the 6.4L PSD.

Ford has had it share of teething problems in the past IMO. The 6.0 was a problem child, and the 6.4 had a few issues as some point as well. Don't know if there are any more. Were there teething problems with the dodge?

I know that something unspeakable would happen to my '03 f250, I'd be getting a new Dodge because I just can't stand the droopy face look on the new Superduty.
Either that or it would hasten my buying of an "09 Challenger, but I do need a truck.

If you had a 6spd tranny and swapped in a 12v cummins then you wouldn't have to worry about all of the computer controlled stuff. the 12v has a mechanical pump and you wouldn't have to worry about shift points and all of that. I know of people who have done this and it is complicated, but not nearly as bad as it sounds.
