Stupid question number one for the weekend....
Could I get some thoughts and or opinions on the type K thermocouple that Autometer uses in their pyrometers? I do not think I like this type themocouple but then I have not installed one. Only kind I ever used were the drill and tap type. Do they seal good ? Ever have problems with exhaust leaks ? ? Also those of you that have Di Pricol gauges are you happy with them>? I am really wanting Di pricols but I found a guy on ebay selling Automeeters for a good price.
Please help with opinions I'd appreciate it.
Every manufacturer of automotive style exhaust gauges uses type K thermocouples. The only difference is the type of mount.
I've installed several of the clamp on style probe that autometer favors. They don't leak as long as you use the washer and get it tight.
The drill and tap method in the manifold is the only mounting style I really don't like. Any time you drill cast iron it's going to crack. It's only a matter of time. I'd much rather have the pyro clamped, or threaded into the up pipe.
I can answer the question re the thermocouple. I personally have installed two (2) of them and have had absolutely no problems in any way shape or form. They thread into a pipe thread and as long as you don't bury the pipe tape to the hilt you will have no problems.
The gauges? I have no experience with that brand. I Don't know, never heard of them. Autometer is a good gauge as are many other brands used by several forum members.

Thanks Rog, I think I will go with the Autometer I can get the Cobalt 1600 degree Pyro Which I like for a steal of a deal .
I was reading your mods on your truck ( mine is also a '97) Did the 1.00 turbine housing raise your egt any? I am gonna pull my turbo probably next week and install a 1.00 housing and a new wheel and rebuild kit.
Thanks again !
It didn't so much raise the EGT's as it seems to have made them more sensitive but they're not out of control either. I have not as yet chipped my truck and when I do I'm sure I will see much improvement. I'm also still running the Split-shot, A/B 120cc injectors.
I see.. What from I been told it should not be a problem to you go change injectors. But then I don't know diddly compared to most of you guys about Strokers.
My injectors are still stock. That is a lot of expense when you go replacing injectors. I had to replace 3 injectors right after I bought this truck but and I went back stock. I found a place to get them for $150.00.
I'm not planning on changing my injectors anytime soon. I will wait and see what happens after I get my chip installed. I do have another set of injectors that I purchased off of E-Bay to have modded if I should decide to go that way.

Cookie:
I have never had a exhaust manifold crack from drilling and tapping a hole and believe me throughout the years I have drilled a bunch. Granted they were all gassers but I wouldn't think that would make a difference. Perhaps a cause for cracking could be:
1) Tapping to deep
2) Tightening too tight
3) Drilling & tapping in a thin area
Drilling and tapping on the PSD manifold should be very trouble free as you are drilling on that "Flat Boss" area.jmho
