Ok the tranny is killing me. The truck came with a trans commander(BANKS) on it which I beleive is and electronic shift kit. If this thing has any improvement over stock then stock must SUCK. On the upper end it takes forever for the shift to complete, and when towing the shift is wait, wait wait, and then BAM it drops into gear. Looked at drilling the VB but while cheap its so permanent and unadjustable if I screw it up. So all this to say ---------- Who has a shift kit and How do you like it?
Need to change the fluid so I thought I would drop the pan do the filter and a shift kit at the same time. Anything else maintanence or "cheap" performance wise while I am in there?
I had the Transgo tugger kit put in when I had my trans rebuilt and it shifts great another thing I had done was the Sonnax kit installed. I used no electric modules on the trans no it it works perfect. Also run Synthetic Fluid and have a spin on external trans filter added as well.
You can get modded VB's from builders or build/tune yourself.
The transgo is good with the addition of flow valves for cooling and lube.
The valves also give you more adjustability.
On the sonnax modulator you can increase the size to increase overall pressure in the VB.
Modulators are .331, .372, .427, .500, .670
I have never had to use larger than a .427.
Stock in 97 was .372
Spin on filter is a way to go but a bypass filter is much better.
Toss the T-Command.

So i looked at this sonnax pack but had a question on the "Pump fix" Is this something that can be done with the tranny in the truck?
Sonnax is pleased to announce our 4R100 application-specific kit to provide rebuilders with a full complement of parts in one box to cure common root-cause problems.Sonnax Sure Cure™ kitswill simplify decisions for transmission rebuilders by providing the best Sonnax fixes in one box with detailed, step-by-step instructions, and all orderable by one part number.
Helps to eliminate reoccurring Code 62 in the computer.
Full time lube and increased cooler flow.
Bushing walking and spinning.
Replacement of O.E. plastic drain back valve, with metal valve.
Improves pump durability.
Code 62 is a very common problem that relates to converter clutch slippage. When Code
62 is set, the transmission will begin to shift hard and late. The OD cancel light will begin
to flash. Superior supplies the parts and modifications needed to fix this problem.
The custom bushing is designed with a knurled outer surface to help eliminate spinning
and walking. The bushing also has the drain back notch pre-cut.

Most of the kit can be done with the trans in the truck but the pump parts need to have the trans pulled and the pump removed.
Pretty much in that picture from start just above the bushing up those parts are accumulator body parts and are under the pan. With exception of the top valve, I think that goes in the pump. You can buy all the parts separate in that kit that can be done with the trans in the truck.
It lacks all the part that make the ESE unique. The sonnax kit keeps the EPC system in tact and the ESE removes it. The three springs are about the only thing they have in common.
How do you like the ese TJ? Does the variable line pressure seem better than just increasing it overall? I heard that the Ese kit is alot more invovled for install. How hard was it? I found the Sonnax kit on ebay for $89 and had heard good things about it. The pump thing I hadn't heard of and wondered if it was worth all the hassle of pulling the tranny. Just looking for something to clean the shifts up and make the tranny last a little longer.
with the Sonnax Kit and the transgo it made a world of difference I also had some work done to the valve body but it shifts now like an auto should I was using the cure before rebuild and have since taken it off. NO need for it now. I got the external filter kit from diesel site.

The ESE is more involved than just a shift kit but with some better instructions in the kit or from Bill or myself you could do it by just taking your time.

Are you sure about that? Even a fully built BTS can benefit from The Cure!
I am not totally sure of it, but I had the Cure on it right after trans was done and drove it for a couple of months. Then took it off and drove it awhile and honestly I have noticed no differences in the shifts. I swore by it before I had my trans done, and I still think it's a great product, but I took it off. it is now on my dad's truck and he likes it. I would recommend it to anyone though.

Ok I am confused, need to talk VB's for the layman here, what is it exactly, combination, that was used from each supplier (Sonnax, Transgo), and does any one put out a complete VB with these upgrades already incorperated? I did not see a VB offered by Sonnax, what would you recomend adding to a BTS VB?
