Exclamation TOYOTA Ford pitman arm problem

For those of you that have a toyota box and and stock ford steering with a midfifty pitman arm.check the weld around the splind.if it is welded all around, you cant use a pitman arm puller to get it off,the puller will not fit as there are no flat surface for the puller to work on.I had to get under the truck with a die grinder and cutoff wheel to make a surface for the puller to work.If you plan on using the midfiffty arm grind flat spots before installing. It will save you a lot of agravation.

I've remove my pitman arm several time without an issue the latest being about 3 weeks ago when I replaced my steering box. I got mine from Midfifty about 16 years ago, I got my puller from Advanced auto parts. My pitman arm is welded about mid-way along the arm.

I can see your problem if you try to use a two claw gear puller to try to remove the arm. There is a simple and inexpensive tool called a "pitman arm puller" (imagine that!) that will remove it quickly and easily. Looks like a small C clamp made from flat stock with a U cutout opposite the bolt. Slip the U over the pitman shaft behind the arm and with the tool's bolt over the end of the shaft. Tighten down the bolt with a wrench. If the arm doesn't just pop right off, tighten the nut firmly but not enough to bend the tool and give the bolt a sharp rap with a hammer, that should do the trick. I have also taken pitman arms off with two flat pry bars ("wonder bars") inserted on opposite side of the shaft between the arm and the frame and popping it loose with a quick hard push on both at the same time. Desperation time called for a couple heavy screw drivers or cold chisels tapped alternately between the arm and the end of the box. It's a tapered wedge fit, so you don't need to move it far before it will come loose.

I watched a guy break a finger doing that. It worked, dont get me wrong, but the project stalled for a while after that!
