I have an '03 4.6L F150 and have the same symptoms. Part throttle rattle at tip-in while cruising. Also a rattle starting at 4K rpm WOT. To me this sounds like LOAD is not being calculated correctly, knock sensor advance is messed up or enrichment queues are not being triggered.
Tinkering with a programmer for a while I've found that these same conditions are basically what happens when I've added too much global spark on a car without knock sensors. I think this is true because tip-in load and high rpm WOT load seem to be two extremes these systems see.
I am going to change the knock sensor type from 1 to 0 and see if that is enough to disable. There are a lot of other parameters so I guess I'll find out.
Other items to consider.
EGR flow actually helps to reduce knock, maybe there is insufficient flow due to sticky valve. ( have yet to explore this.)
Dirty ACT sensor that is not reporting correct temp and thus not pulling enough timing for ACT inputs. (tried new one, did not help me)
Hate to revive an old thread, but can anyone tell me what this pinging sounds like and if my truck was doing this when would I notice it. I have an 01 f350 with a 4.30 rear diff. Twice in the last 5 months the truck has stalled suddenly after coming to a stop, no stumble, couldn't tell until I stepped on the go peddle and nothing, put it in neutral and started right up. The truck runs smooth, no hesitation and gets around 9.0 mpg no matter what it does. The only sound that has questioned me occurs at cruising speeds on the highway and occurs only between 60-65mph and is not rpm dependent, the sound is a high pitched whistle kind of like a turbo. Any ideas?
Thanks, I thought that if the stall was a fuel problem I would have some stumbling before it died, the two times my truck stalled was after coming to a stop, and sudden, I couldn't even tell it died until I hit the gas and nothing.
