anyone ever try putting a efi 5.8 in a 97-03 f150. mine is a 5speed and thought about a stoked out 351w (408 stroke but still more or less stock just more ci) to give it the torque it deserves. not a big fan of the mod motors but like this body style truck.
For the money it would take to stroke out a 351 and get it to work correctly with the rest of the truck, you could put a supercharger on your mod motor.
If you've got the fab skills and the money, you can do it.
You will need to make your own motor mounts, and you might have to relocate/modify the cross-member. Don't forget the entire wiring harness and computer for the 351. I don't think the stock gauge cluster will work with the 351's computer either...
You'll need the transmission for the 5.8 and wiring harness. You'll then need to fab it's own crossmember from scratch. Same applies for the T-case...you'll need the one with the tranny you get, and fab it's own cross-member. New driveshafts, and lots of little details/quirks that you will run into....
Oh.. I didnt realize you had a 4.6, For the amount of fab work, electric, etc. needed to swap in a older motor(different tranny, gauges, etc.) it wouldnt really be worth it.
You could swap out your 4.6 and go to a 4 valve 5.4, and have TONS more torque. Do a search here for the guy who swapped out his motor for a 4 valve. This would be MUCH easier and cheaper to accomplish.
Edit: I looked at your gallery and noticed you have 35s. These trucks are undergeared stock, and with 35s it makes it MUCH worse. You should regear your truck to at least 4.56s to get back alot of performance. Im about to switch my 3.55s to 4.56s soon, I just got to order them.
The 4.2 and 4.6 use the same mazda 5spd tranny
The 4.2 and 302 share a bellhousing pattern
The 302 and 351W are basically the same motor
So theoretically he could find a bellhousing off of a v6 and drop in a 351W and it should bolt up. It would probably be easiest if he went with a carbed engine. That way he wouldn't have to worry about so much electrical stuff. And with a 4bbl carb he could maybe save some gas over a 2bbl and maybe make it even with a EFI. gauges would be the only problem.
If any(or all) of these statements is wrong please correct me. Its late and I am very tired.

The Mazda manual transmission (M5OD?) in these trucks are already VERY weak. A buddy of mine broke his with a stock 4.6L. What do you think is going to happen when the tranny sees double the stock HP & TQ? I wouldn't even trust the stock 4R70W, which is much stronger than the M5OD.
Thats a good point. I was just saying that theoretically, if he did all of that, it would fit. If he was going to do any work to the 351 he might also think about beefing up the rear end.
If he needs that much torque he needs to put his money in a F250 diesel. He'll be much happier with that than an "re-engineered" F150. Before I'd swap in a 351 I'd sure be changing gear ratios. Big tall tires kill power! What about emission testing in Beaver OH? Even if it's not required now it one day may be. Resale value, would you buy a 99 F150 that someone else re-engineered" a 351 into ..... not me..
