I think the lock mechanism should be the same. I replaced my locks from the junkyard out of an even older F150. I just had to swap the plastic arm on the locks. They just clip on. They were easy to change. Don't even need to take the door panel off.
Open the door, there is a metal tab on the edge of the door. Grab it with Channel-locks and pull it loose from the door. The lock mechanism will come out of the door. Remove the lock bar, check your plastic arm with the new ones, swap as necessary, reconnect to the lock bar, reinsert lock and then reinsert the metal tab. I did mine in about 10 mins.
the door shells are the same , yes you can use the later doors on the early and visa versa, whats different? 92-97 used a cable style internal door latch inside where the 91- used rods the later model and a nothed vent window for clearing the edge of the dash board to the poster who said the door locks are differnt , your right but only for 80-81 with slide locks and the exterior cylinder was still the same . you can actually use any of the doors from 1980 -1996 and 97 hd i had an 89 and a 91 on my 80 bronco i restored.
the earlier years are shorter keys-the mid 90s are 10 cut keys-they have 10 pins as opposed to the 5 pin tumbler-the locks look longer to me-new ones from a parts store may be much easier-heck swap the whole door-that will work they have the window and lock buttons in a much better spot anyway
