1988 f350 4x4 with 7.3 IDI. It seems to have stopped having the problem of sticking while cranking and starting but now it wants to shut off when braking or with medium to hard accelerating. Then it cranks but doesn't want to restart. WTF? Thanks for the help.
Could be a couple things........ low fuel pressure
Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .
OR
The IP is going bad, if it is worn out it will have very hard starting hot..... starts ok cold.
If it stalls on turning corners, hard braking or pushing the clutch in it could be rusty internals. There is a TSB 94-5-11 explaining the problem and possible repair. If you would like the TSB click on my name, email me and and use Subject: IP TSB.
I was pricing injector pumps and only two places even carried them. One wanted $550 (Ford) and the other $715 (Autozone). Who else carries these and won't charge me more than I paid for the truck?
Make sure there looking for the right truck. Advance and zone sell them for around 35.00 hear but they may be including core charge, just make sure you take the old ones out first.
Several vendors online- ebay-sell reconditioned Injector pumps for as little as $265 plus core charge. I've been running one for 2 years now with no problems.
It's actually over $30 cheaper for me to buy it from Pensacola Diesel through Ebay than through them directly. On Ebay I get free shipping and no Florida sales tax. Thanks for the help.
i agree on pensacola diesel, i bought reman turbo injectors from them for $120 with free shipping and they arrived in 2 days (im in Pa) and they came with a sheet certified at pop pressure.
