Why do some brain dead morons just HAVE to screw on an oil filter so tight you have to completely destroy it to remove it. Not to mention the veins that pop out of your head when trying to do this. GRRRR!!
because (no offense to anyone).... people who change oil usually dont have the capability to do much more. They dont read, and dont care.
remember, gaskets GROW when they get warm. I usually use the two hand wrench with filters (screw on with both hands, and stop). Oil before installing and it will come off.
The second part of the answer is that some oil change place somewhere at sometime had an oil filter that was loose and it leaked the oil out and destroyed an engine and the oil change place had to pay. So, the boss tells the grease monkey to screw that thing on real tight.
The general rule of thumb that unfortunatly most lube places don't know is filters are designed to by spun on by hand until the gasket touches the filter base then turn another 3/4 turn. It does however boggle my mind how such a simple task can be screwed up by these lube shops. I was running out of time to get the oil changed before we took our trip to Wyoming so we had to go to Wal-Mart and get some stuff so had them go ahead and change the oil. It wasn't until after that I learned their house brand oil is RECYCLED!!!!!! Needless to say I was VERY mad. I left it in until we got to the folk's place in Wyo and we headed straight to dad's shop and changed it lol.

I love to change the oil on my little Fords. Only ones I have owned that I can fill the oil filter before I install it. I know no one else who would take the time to do it. Just makes my heart sing that after I change the oil on my trucks the oil filter is full for the first start up.
Duane, where did you get the info on wally world's oil being recycled? I hadn't heard that before and have run their Tech in some of my older vehicles. I have read here on other forums of folks using their oil with no ill consequences.
At this point most of my vehicles are "older."
If their oil is made from recycled oil, can it still meet the standard classifications shown on the label?
I always use Valvoline and Wix or Ford filters. If'n ya can't git Valvoline Castrol ain't bad. Penz is what I stay away from. I keep un extree oil filter and 6 quarts in my tote fer when I goes wheel'n. Then at oil change time I have it on hand and just buy what I need to replace fer the next wheel'n trip. Made a 5 spot or 6 on the trail when folks need'd a quart. I have never charged for it but it seems to be what folks through at me. And smile from ear ta ear glad ta git it when'n they do.
I also use WIX or motorcraft filters, Delco in a pinch, but I prefer a good quality synthetic oil. My lil dodge is a turbo and I run the best I can get in it(royal purple). I may or may not run synth in the bronco, but the tranny fluid just got changed to synth, the power steering, transfer case, and both diffs will also get the synthetic goo too.
Well I just paid my stupid tax for the day. Fired up the bronco (first time since the oil change) and it promptly puked 5 quarts of fresh valvoline 10-30 all over the driveway. Seems the rubber gasket from the previous oil filter was still stuck there, and between that and the new one on the new filter, well, you guessed it...once I fired it up, pukage began... Amazing how fast it all came out though.. wow.. Off to wallyworld for another 5 quart bottle... sigh....
ROFL !!! Don't feel bad man, we have all done that one before and from now on I bet money you will make sure the old seal is on the old filter before you spin the new one on!!
Del, I got that from the guy at the counter AFTER they did the oil change, I am sure they filter it and it would still have to pass al the same tests as any other oil but it is the fact that they don't tell you this up front.
