I recently bought a 2002 excursion 7.3 diesel. About 1000 miles ago I did my first oilchange on it. I noticed some oil spots on the ground under it and when I checked under it looked like it was dripping from the oil filter. I tightened the filter and cleaned the area. When I checked the oil level the dip stick indicated I have too much oil in it. The dipstick also clearly states, do not overfill. I am not looking forward to draining some of the oil out, so I was wondering what problems come from it being overfilled, is it something I should be concerned about?
If it is overfilled the level can be high enough that the crankshaft hits the oil. This will whip the oil into a foam, and foam can't lubricate. Now engine parts that must have lube don't get it, so you'll need a new engine.
I agree with RACER... just loosen the drain plug alittle so that it would flow, you can even hold the plug in with a socket and extension so you wouldn't get oil on you. GL!
Yeah, it can cause some slapping of the crank in the oil but it will not destroy your engine. Might rob you of a little horsepower but that is about it. if it's only a quart or two I wouldn't bother with it. I put an extra quart in my cars when I head to the track to race. You'll be fine.
The injectors on your truck are hydraulic and rely on good oil getting to them. If you have too much oil and it starts to foam your engine will start running rough. Drain it out.
I went ahead and drained it. It wasn't a big deal and I wanted to have it right for my camping trip. Just towed a 9000 camper roughly 4 hours each way and on some mountain grades. It tows my camper beautifully. I love my excursion. I'll be getting a set of new tires on it this week, I am getting Yokohama Geolandar AT/S tires on it. Did I mention I love my xcursion.
