Larry's "Outlaw Trail" runs through the area where some JJ was shot. Great country and I recognized a bit of it. Unvorgiven was good and so was Million Dollar baby. Wyatt Earp and Tombstone were shot at the same time or so I was told and they competeted for costumes and such. Ride with the Devil is on today after another showing of JJ. It is worth a look see also.
JJ was based on Liver eat'n Johnson who made peace with those Indians. Guess'n they tired of have'n freinds and kin folk killed and there livers cut out and ate so them indians made peace with him.

All the costumes and leather were custom made for Tombstone.
Nothing used after October 1881, the month/year of the so-called OK Corral shootout (*) was used in the film.
The producers wanted to make an accurate to the period film and they succeeded, with one minor exception....and you have to be a Colt nut to know the difference.
The crescent shaped ejector **** on Doc Holliday's Colt Model 1877 Lightning was first used in 1884.
Previous Lightnings, Thunderers and Colt SAA's used a round "bullseye" ejector ****.
When liver eatin' Johnson died, he was buried at the US National Cemetary in West Los Angeles.
Now....he's buried at "OLD TRAIL TOWN" just south of Cody Wyoming.
Larry Edgar, the owner/operator of OLD TRAIL TOWN got permission from Johnson's family to move his body.
* The shootout did not occur at the OK Corral, that nonsense was first mentioned in Stuart N. Lake's so called "authorized" biography of Wyatt Earp.
The shootout occured on a small empty lot off Allen Street between a boarding house and Fly's Photographic Studio.
Lake made up most of what went into his book on Earp. He interviewed Earp exactly ONCE in December 1928 for 15 minutes!
Earp died in January 1929, and is buried in a Jewish cemetary in Colma CA. Earp wasn't Jewish, his 3rd "wife" Josie was.
And...there is no proof that Earp was ever married to his 2nd (Mattie Blaylock) or 3rd wife (Josephine Sarah Marcus).
Thanks Bill. Always good ta know folks are make'n an effort. And they for sure should get credit for it.
I have a question maybe you could answere for me. I have a brace of 51 Navy 1st model Richards conversion Colt clones made by ASM and improrted by Navy arms. I need ta have um worked on and when I send um off I was want'n to have the barrel cut for the plunger, loading lever and ball feed as if it was a cap-n-ball barrel. Is the modern day Colt 1851 Navy Pietta clones accurate in this? The first model Richards originals I have seen were with the cap-n-ball barrel. These have barrels like my RM's. No machine work for the loading lever/plunger and no cut for a loading a round ball. I have a Pietta 1851 Navy Colt clone to pattern off of is the reason I'm ask'n.
Was JJ the movie where he was a trapper... if so I loved the old trapper that "showed him the ropes" ... the bear scene and the fire pit/bed scene were halarious.

I'll have to ask someone I know who has the real thing and the clones...will get back to you. I'm a SAA & Winchester Lever nut.
Bill and Jack, I had read about Liver Eatin Johnson, but didn't realize that JJ was based on him. Bill, thanks for the additional information on Earp etc. It is always fun to learn more about so much of the old west that has been mytholigized in books and movies.
Love the "Christmas Story". There are some parts that are not too different from mine growing up. I guess most folks can identify with it some and that is why it has become a classic.
Faintly remember..???? TBS runs it for like 24hours around christmas (I think it is TBS) Every year. My family and I try and watch it every year. Some years we do, some we don't. Last year the kids dictated we watch Polar express. (not nearly as good, but entertaining non the less.
