What the heck
See if you can get one of the parts stores to let you use their scanner, hopefully you can find one with real time data so you can see what the computer is seeing and maybe notice something wacky? Sometimes crazy stuff can be going on, yet it wont thorw a code. These trucks have an OBDII port, but really are essentially an OBDI system, not too many codes get thrown.
I have an 03 that has done the same thing. I have packed the oss &vss with dielectric grease, pulled the battery terminals, cleaned and torqued, but I am giving up and sending it to the dealer. I am at work for another week and head off hunting when I get in, and do not want to be left stranded in BFA! If they find the problem I will post it on here so no one else will have to bend over. Thats right, I'm taking one for the team!!!
yeah I should take it down and let them scan it. The scanner I was using didnt allow me to take individual cylinder tests and was limited on the abs stuff. Alaska x sorry to hear about your troubles as well it is frustrating but the info would be good.
what the heck
Well I called ford service shop in Fortuna,Ca, and here are the prices and labor that I might need; abs hyro pump $963.00, abs ecu module $393.98, cop's $76.84. $189.00 to diagnose abs, and 1.8 hours to install and bleed brakes if the abs pump is bad. This morning I pulled cop's One at a time, and found none to br bad, and also sprayed carb cleaner on intake manifold and found no leaks. I reckon I got to make the $2000.00 decision soon.
You got a manual?
Here's one if you don't. Nothing has changed even though the manual is for an 03.

I would follow the pinpoint tests as best you can before throwing very expensive parts at it.
And I wouldn't be too quick in checking every ground. I just had some real weird issues with one of my vehicles. I chased every ground that I thought it was and found that it was the ground that I didn't think had ANYTHING to do with my problems!
Now, did you check/replace the VSS on top of the rear diff? I would remove it and inspect it for crud that may be on it.

Thanks for that. Yes I first checked the rear vss and replaced it. Thanks for the manual I already had that one. To do the pinpoint test you need to take the abs pump/module out. Then bleed the entire system. I took everything off to get to it short of taking off the brake lines coming of the pump. I could not get the connector off from the top pr bottom of the truck. And if you did find a component bad you be stuck for awhile. Although I found ford direct parts on this site, and I could save a bunch if thats what it is. I just dropped it off at ford so the could snoop around and tell me what it is. On the drive down I could smell a sulfur smell so maybe the cat is clogged. Now that I think of that it could be possible. 95K on the truck lousy gas mileage and having to floor to make it go good could be it, But the abs I'll let them figure it out. Also yeah I know those COP'S are $76.00 each. Well anyway I will let everyone know what it is as soon as I find out. If it is the cat causing the rough running do you know if I can request an after market high flow cat, or will ford most likely say no due to emissions. Just a thought.
what the heck
Ford asked me about 1 1/2 hrs ago if they could replace one coil pack, #8 cyl and I said go for it. They just called me back and said it was ready and it was running smooth and no abs problems. I gotta believe them since my brother worked on it. I cant wait to pick it up, and start enjoying my truck.

what the heck
Got the x back from ford this evening ,and boy is it running good. Turns out there was an oasis report that reported the very problem that my truck had. To much RF being transmitted from a broken down COP. I got 15.4 miles per gallon on the way home on the highway at 66mph with a 25 mph headwind. Not bad. I am so happy. This rig finally runs like it has a 6.8 in it. Nice.
sure does. Yeah the dang thing put codes in every module in the truck, The rf travels through out the scp/can network.
when I was young they called me that, so yes I am , just not the Olympic skier.

Technical Service Bulletin 5-22-08
1998-2005 MULTIPLE VEHICLES - WARNING LIGHTS FLASHING - TEMP GAUGE PEGGED HOT OR COLD - TACH OR SPEEDO BOUNCE - DRIVEABILITY CONCERN - UNEXPLAINED DTC'S
SOME 1998-2005 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A GAS ENGINE THAT USES A COIL-ON-PLUG (COP) SYSTEM MAY EXHIBIT ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS DUE TO RF INTERFERENCE ON THE SCP/CAN NETWORK: ABS LIGHT FLASHING, A FLASHING FAIL SAFE COOLING LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT FLASHING, INTERMITTENT 'BUMP'(MISS), TEMP GAUGE PEGGING HOT OR COLD, TACH OR SPEEDOMETER BOUNCE, BUCK/JERK AT CRUISE, AND/OR UNEXPLAINED CODES. THERE ALSO MAY BE AN INTERMITTENT LOSS OF RPM. PRIOR TO FOLLOWING NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS FOR THE SYMPTOM, USE TSB 05-22-08 TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A CONCERN WITH A COP. MONITOR POWER BALANCE TO SEE IF A CYLINDER IS DROPPING OUT DURING CONCERN. IF POWER BALANCE CONFIRMS A CYLINDER DROPPING OUT AT THE TIME OF THE CONCERN, PERFORM THE COP STRESS TEST FOR THE SUSPECT CYLINDER'S COIL TO VERIFY INTERNAL COIL SECONDARY FAILURE.
Running an OASIS report on your vehicle should bring up the TSB alert, like it does on the cruise control fix and the CPS fix, etc.
