Question's about valve spring height

Hi,
I'm looking at a Crane cam and matching springs (Crane #96801). According to Crane, the installed spring height should be 1.800 but with no shims I'm measuring 1.930 and that's with the retainers (Crane #99957) Crane recommends to use with these springs. I was browsing the Comp web site and I looked at 4 different springs they recommend to use with FE cams. With Comp, 3 of those springs call for a 1.900 height that I can get with a shim but the fourth calls for 1.800 like Crane which looks to be impossible to get. I did notice with Comp all 4 of these springs are calling for different retainers. Can anybody explain the different height requirements and how does one get a .100 difference? Is it in the retainers? I know cups and locators are available but .130 seems like way too much. For the record heads are Casting # C80E-6090-N. Thanks for the help!!

I was never that far off the 1.800 spec. Have your valve seats been cut several times??
I think there's various retainers available that can vary the installed height.
I would HIGHLY Recommend buying Crane springs over Comps. The last set of comp springs I purchased had only 3 0r 4 of them meet their spec, the rest were 5-15 lb low out of the box. I returned them, and purchased Crane springs where every one of them met their spec.

Pretty common to see a big variance between OE and aftermarket parts. The factory spec for those heads is 1.8200. You are only .100 off. I'd run a .060 locator under the spring in any case - assuming the heads are machined for flat spring pockets. Otherwise you can purchase -.050 valve locks and/or retainers. You won't get to 1.800 nor should you - thats just a checking number for the spring.

Neither Crane nor Comp make their own springs. They are wound by either Associated or Petersen....depending on part number.

Those springs (from Crane's website) show "Ford V-8 w/1.077-1.850" installed heights"

CraneCams

So even with a .060 spring locator, you're at 1.870

Sounds like your valve seats are sitting pretty low...

What's the lift on that cam?

I didn't see that on the Crane site. But if you look above it says "Seat Pressure @ Installed Height 114 lbs @ 1.800"

And also if you look at the cam sheet (Crane #343801) under the spring requirements it says:
Part Number 96801
Loads Closed 114 LBS @ 1.800 or 1 13/16
Open 290 LBS @ 1.240

So I called Crane with this same question last week and the guy I spoke was not very friendly but insisted I hit the 1.800 number.

I really don't know how many times the valves have been cut but I think I can guess at least 3 times, maybe that's the problem. I will probably call Barry about this since I'm probably going to buy from him anyway.
