I keep reading that you shouldn't over rev a stroked motor. What is the purpose of a stroked motor? Is it for towing and not for racing? I thought about building a stroker, but now I'm not sure. I want to build my truck into a sleeper. Keep the rust and faded paint, but have a built motor and trick suspension.I want HP and handling without the truck looking like much. Any suggestions guys?
Not sure what your definition of stroker is, or what you think lot's of rev's are, but consider that a 390 is a factory stroked version of a 360, same with a 410, and I think you'll find plenty of 6,000 rpm capable race motors built from those.
Some posts I have read mention 6000 rpm as over reving. I guess it would be tough to keep a motor at 6000rpm for too long on the street. I will not be on the dragstrip anytime soon. I was researching stroker kits for my 360 and found the 390 & 410 kits. Are there any bigger ones available and would there be any advantage to going bigger than 410?
I think a chinese forged crank can be had as large as 4.375" in throw IIRC try talking with Barry R at survivalmotorsports.com probably best deal on a package considering the experience that comes with the package. A stroker gives you a longer stroke to increase cubic inches. The old saw applies, "The is no replacement for displacement!" If you want a towing engine then horsepower is irrelivant. Torque is what makes a motor a tow motor. Horsepower just give you top speed. The 410 version with the 3.98" stroke would give you the most torque. Even thought I towed for years with a modified 390 in my 1968 F250, C-6 and 3.73 rearend. That was with a 9 foot camper and either the race or ski boat behind it.
The 360 block is the same as a 390. I'd throw a 4.25 stroke at it for 445 cubes. It'll rev past 6500 if you want to - but most street truck packages will focus on the added torque. You' be gaining 85 cubes - thats gonna be like "shot out of a cannon" compared to what the 360 feels like
If you want MAX HP why not go with a 428. It will match to the tranny. The 360 is referred to as a destroked 390. Look up the CAR options of the 390 ( Cobra, Super Cobra, Interceptor). The 428 had the same stuff and ate hemi's in the day.
