Guys,
I need to ask a general question. I am in the middle of transfering the body, engine(400) and transmission of a 1978 F250 4x4 to a new frame. I will probably pull the engine by itself, because it needs a new clutch. My question is: Is the transmission usually moved forward of the engine compartment with the transfer case, and then dropped? I assume that it is, I know that the crossmember dosen't just drop, from restoring the newframe. I know there is alot of weight there with the NP205 and xfer case, I was just wondering what was the most common way of removing them. I have the common issue with space to work, I can't just remove the cab, set it down and then move the transmission. although I probably have the front clip off.
Thanks for any tips.
You should have no problem dropping them out the bottom i just did on my 77 F-250 last weekend, my 205 case has a support on the left side and just pull the bolts out of the adapter housing. You can pull the center floor pan to get at the top bolts alot easier. Then you should be able to take the bolts out that hold the crossmember to the frame and the tranny mount bolt.
Only camera i have is strapped to a tree next to my deer stand, but its all pretty self explanatory if you get under there and look . And jeff if you allready have the engine out you can take the transmission foward and drop it leaving the crossmember in , I did that on my 83 after i blew the engine, but you'll probaly still wanna take the 205 off first its terribly heavy as far as T-cases go.
I meant Jeff since he'll be pulling it out. I have to tear down my truck soon and I have the same tranny, if there are any tricks then pics would be handy.
