Need winch advice

I am looking to buy a winch for my truck. I figure I need at least a 12,000 lb unit. I was going to get the new 15k warn, but then I found out about the milemarker 12k that is hydraulic. It seems like a better option to me, but I have no experience with either other than big hydraulic winches on heavy equipment. I hear warn makes top quality stuff, but electric winches have a drawback of overheating. My truck weighs close to 9,000 lb and I have 35" tires on it so when I get stuck it is going to take some serious winching power to get me out. Does anyone have any experience with the milemarker hydraulic unit, or have any tips for a newbie winch buyer?

I don't know much about hydrolic winches, but my cousin just put the new 15x winch on his truck and is very pleased with it. Its a big sucker. I know many guys who run the warn winches and I've never heard any complaints...and if they do warn has great customer service. Just get the ****** block kit if your worried about having enough pulling strength, it will double your pulling capacity.

The nice thing about the Hydro units is that they can run for a long time before they over heat. I think they might be continous duty and no battery drain. The down side is the engine MUST be running, just like a PTO, no engine = no winch.

the electrics are popular and work for most uses, but if you don't get out within a short time, you could be done. I'd consider a dual-battery setup.

I went with a custom made winch that uses a 24 volt aircraft starter motor with 850# of torque because my truck is a fullsize F250 longbed with the 35" tires and I don't like being stuck, and It was cheap.

I don't know what type of truck you have, but a 70's F250 4x4 is about 4600#, are you sure you're looking unladen weight? 9000# is near big rig weight.

Just wanted to second Karl's advice, anybody who goes with an electric winch should also put in a dual battery system. I got one for @100 bucks (Painless) and its cheap insurance.
