I have somewhat limited personal experience with them.
Can they go over 200k? Yep. Can they go over 200k without problems, rarely, but yep. Common problems are head gaskets, (fixed with head studs) turbo problems, injectors, and I have noticed a automatic tranny problem with some that tow. They have a bad rep for a good reason, they were very problematic (not all but a good percentage of them) in the stock form. Ive had salesmen tell me that in person when I looked at a few.
You also wanna make sure that the mods to fix all the problems are done before the warranty goes out, or it gets costly.
Have two buddies that have blow trannies while towing, and our old shop truck (a 03) went through two of them. I believe this can be fixed by tuning.
My suggestion, get it cheap, and budget the head studs, and a good tuner or programmer that has either tranny tunes, or save some cash and beef the tranny up a little.
Im actually looking at one with bad head gaskets in it (an 06 with no more factory warranty) for a pretty cheap price. If I can get it cheap enough, and get the head gaskets done at ford with head studs, and the price still is cheap, I think im gonna go for it.
Mine is no where near the 200,000 kms yet, only at 94,xxxx kms, I`ve got my fingers crossed. So far it`s great with no prior history of problems.
It`ll never be used to tow overly heavy stuff and it never will be used as a beat death work truck.
I absolutely love it.
I have almost 210000 kms on mine - it was one of the problematic ones that you hear of. At 165000 kms mine had the headgaskets done with the upgrade to ARP headstuds, new waterpump, EGR cooler (second one), oil cooler, glow plugs (damaged from water in the cylinders). I also did the EGR disabling via my SCT and installed the blocker plug to keep hot exhaust gas out of my EGR cooler so the solder wouldnt keep melting and thus leaking. I had a few alternators and a turbo done earlier. I have a programmer and run close to 500 engine hp when its in the highest level. I dont tow in that setting at all. I also run a milder program for light towing like sleds or boats and then there is a heavy tow program with turbo braking and much improved tow/haul performance for big loads.
I would run an OASIS to see the track record of the truck and buy cheap enough to have the cab off procedure done to replace head gaskets. Once the upgrades are done, I think it will be okay but it will always have a high maintenance potential. Injector problems continue to plague some of them as well. In stock form they are very lazy off the line with incredible turbo lag.
The 6 liter is different then that though. Some guys do routine maintenance (and then some) treat them like gold, and still have the common problems go wrong. (problems range from 03-07, although less common in 06/07)
Definately go for an oasis over a previous maintenance record.
As for the diesel factor, once a get into one, you will have a hard time not having one around!
yeah no doubt, well i'll just post the links then... since most of the stuff sounds like my dad can fix if necessary, it would just be the cost of parts plus a couple bottles of rye lol
lerado does the truck cab have to actually come off to change the headgaskets?! that sounds weird...
i havent looked at them yet but thats about my price range and obviously id like to get the best i can for my price... anyone have any idea of some of the prices for the major issues?
Well I don't know the 6.0l I have heard really bad things about them of course not all of them are bad but dam you never know they are a problematic engine especially the 03-04 model years but yeah get an oasis and be prepared for the worse because it is possible but happy hunting good luck
From everything I have researched, the cab does have to get lifted up to change the head gaskets (the days of sitting in the engine compartment to do repairs are gone!)
From the trucks you posted, they look ok. I bet you could talk em down a little in price, but first i would find out what has and hasnt been done on them. Apr studs being a big deciding factor. Price isnt bad though for either truck, but for a few grand more you could probably find one with a little less km, or might be able to find a 7.3 truck.
Yeah a 6 liter is nice when they arent blowing stuff up for sure!
Later model 7.3's are just dandy, nice and quiet
If ya want a real diesel and not a quiet pansy running one (like ALL new ones) get a 12, or even a 24 valve cummins, they knew how to make a diesel sound like a diesel!
