I think he put in the studs when he did the head gaskets the first time. He hauls camper trailer from the States up to Canada, So he does put a lot of miles on in a year. Big difference from my Dad's '05 6.0l, he only has 40,000k's on it!
You are right in being cautious. Especially with the 6 liters, you have to be really extremely careful because there was alot of bad ones. 7.3's are nice but your right, they still go for top dollar.
Lots of 6.0`s driving around so are there that many that are bad?
Have you checked the 6.0 forum Sheldon and what did you find out, what percentage are really seriously problem prone?
I think you pay your money and takes your chances with any brand of diesel powered 3/4-1 ton truck, whether it`s engine related problems or the rest of the truck such as suspension, trans, electronics etc. In my mind none of the makes are as good as they should be for the cost........
Well it depends I guess on what ya call bad. Seems like most trucks have gotten something done under warranty at fairly low miles.
The guys in the 6 liter forum are really knowledgable, but very biased. Most of them post that their truck has been great, and has only had a head gasket or turbo, or whatever blow, but replaced under warranty.
So to answer your question, from the research ive done, yeah alot of them had problems. Not that the problems arent fixable, they are, but with no warranty, like the ones Kirk is looking at, thats when ya gotta be careful, pull the oasis reports, and see what has been modified (like the head studs)
Someday when your bored, talk to a few techs that work for ford, they will tell you the kinds of problems they have had. When i was looking at trucks I talked to alot of mechanics at different places in the lower mainland, as well as salesman. They all said the same thing, lots of problems.
I still love the trucks though, just gotta be careful with the motor!
That`s a good idea to talk to some of the Jubilee Ford techs.
I`ve never noticed a whole bunch of the Super Duty`s lined up in the dealership`s repair bays but I might as well get the low down right from the horse`s mouth.
Too bad my friend Marvin is no longer working there, he left on long term disability (bad back) just as the 6.0`s were coming out. He was their main diesel tech for many years.
i was going to say what Fom did... if the 6.0 was such a problematic flop, why are there oodles of them on the road?? same goes for the new 6.4L... i know there are problematic trucks out there, but here we only hear of the Ford problems. i will go out on a limb to say that each manufacturer likely has had as many problems as the 6.0 just most of us don't go out looking into other brands problems when we have our own.

If ya honestly research them, youll see what I mean. Has chevy and dodge had other problematic motors as the 6 liter, at one time or another yes. Fords turn was the 6 liter. As far as diesel go, dodge has ridden the cummins train and havent had problems anywhere nears this (some sure, not not like the 6 liter commons) Has chevy, you bet, the 6.5 was a pos, it followed the "legendary" 6.2 people had high expecations with the 6.5.
I just believe its good to be informed of the good and bad of them!
The reason why so many are on the road, people want newer more powerful more technological advanced trucks. Ford build a great truck and people didnt expect the problems with the 6 liter (after all the 7.3 navistar did so great, people had high expectations) Alot of people still look for the 7.3 liter trucks, why? Now that they are getting high miles on them people have to look onto a 6 liter (nothing wrong with that, if they are informed)
I know ya like your fords man, and you dont wanna say anything bad about them, but with a little research, youll see exactly why I post the things I post about the stock 6 liter.(Better to be informed then uninformed)
Remember they can be fixed to be pretty good engines, but they had more then their fair share of problems with them.
