Sorry guys, bit every once in a while this car just pops back into my head. Back in the mid '70s I used to frequent this wrecking yard for mustang parts. The owner had a pristine black 1962 Galaxie under a cover on blocks. I'm pretty sure it was '62, big round tub. I wasn't into the big ones in those days. This car had factory dual 4 barrels, and I believe factory cast iron headers? They weren't the exhaust logs anyway. Sorry but every once in a while I think I need this car. Is it real? Factory horsepower? How many made? Thanks.
No 406 ever came with dual 4 barrels. All 406 had a single 4 barrel from the factory. If you ordered the 3X2 set up it came in the trunk and your dealer or you installed it. That's how I got my 3X2 set up. Out of the trunk of a stored 1962. Dual 4 barrels showed up with the 427 in 1963.
A friend of mine had a 1962 Galaxie with a 406 4 barrell with a 4 speed and we never got beat or even close by a 409 Chevy and we raced a lot of them. The 406 and the 427 were 2 fast engines.

Maybe it was a 3X2, I do remember an oval air cleaner. Is that what you have? Thanks for the feedback.
Yup, that's the air cleaner I remember. Did these also have cast iron headers? I'm sure the ones I saw weren't tubular steel. What do you have this engine in? thanks.

Thanks, Bear. Those must be some pretty rare pieces nowadays huh?
I found mine in Las Vegas in 1972. I don't think I would even want to look today. I do know where a complete 1963 Galaxie 427, 425 horse 4 speed car is though. Three blocks up the street. He was the original owner.
406 cars are still reasonably priced compared to the 427 cars. But still out of reach for many of us. 62.5 to 63.5 was production timeframe. Then the new 427 came out and closed the door on the 406. So only a 1 year production timeframe but service parts were offered for years. I've had a few 406 engines and it's interesting to see the test mule it was for the 427. A few variations of blocks and heads. Many of them carried over to the 427. Exact 406 production number for 62.4-63.5 Ford and Mercury are not known. But around 4500 units is what the experts figured. 63-64 Ford and Mercury 427 production somewhere in the 8000+ range. Figures do not include the factory LW race cars and other odditys.
Bear I believe those are the 427 long cast headers pictured there. 406 used the shorty's like the 352HP and 390HP. And a tip of the hat to Carl's Ford parts for getting those carbs and many other versions done and reissued at Holley again.
When I sold my last 406 a few years ago the 3x2 unit (intake, carbs, fuel log, linkage, air cleaner all original) sold for $1600+. Date code matching 2J20 .030 C3AE-D block and C2SE-C heads went for $1800. It hurt to sell at the time but made way for my current project. When I first bought the engine it was complete and cost me $1400. Over the counter TRW .030 forged 406 slugs, mismatched rods and 2U 390 crank. Crane Fireball solid cam went flat on 4 lobes. Was in a 64 Gal the PO was told it's a fresh build on a std bore block. Disgusted with the engine he yanked it, pulled it apart and saw what a ******* build it was. I stepped up and bought it wanting another 406. And made a few bucks on it later on. LOL.

Not exactly true.
The 406 Galaxie lightweights introduced the dual 4-bbl intake in 1962 for drag racing. If you don't believe me, check out any of the Ford-specific books that have been published in the last couple of years on 60's Super Stock drags. I would name them, but I am upstairs and the books are downstairs and I am lazy.
So no, no STOCK 406 came from the factory with a dual 4-bbl intake (although we all know that some pretty odd things came out of the factories in the early 60's), BUT a dual 4-bbl intake WAS available in 1962 for the 406s.

Interesting claim, but Ford does not say that is true, so you will have to come up with a cite and numbers to make me believe it.
