Got in the Ex the other day. Had the family plus some friends in it and we were off to the nature center. Got on the highway and the cruise didn't work. My wife said, "Oh yeah, I meant to tell you that the cruise stopped working yesterday."
Well, after we got home I thought, maybe a taillight is out? Nope. So I checked the fuse and it was good.
So, I open the hood, and I notice that it looked like brake fluid had been leaking down on the shock tower and the paint there was all wrinkled up. All the lines looked dry, then I discovered the leak. It was the sending unit at the front of the master cylinder. The one that has the crusie control recall wiring plugged into it. The connectors were all wet.
Thank you God for not letting the brakes fail while we were on our trip.
I called the Ford shop. They said that is the cruise disconnect switch. I thought it was tied into your brake switch, but I guess I was wrong. It cost $25.99. I unscrewed it, screwed the new one in and the cruise was fixed. Brakes feel fine. I did have to add brake fluid to MC.
So, if your cruise stops working, CHECK THE MASTER CYLINDER FOR LEAKS!
Go outside right now and unplug that thing! Thats what burns down ford vehicles left and right! The switch goes bad and leaks fluid into the electrical part and it shorts out and catches fire! Usually when just sitting in the driveway parked in the middle of the day/night! Just unplug the lil connector and tape the end up for good measure. I would do this IMMEDIATLY.
Literally hundreds if not thousands of fords have burned to the ground do to this exact same problem.

According to his post, he's already had the recall done bro.

So, you didnt have to bleed the master cylinder or anything? I thought if you had to replace one of those switches, air would get in there and the system would have to be bled. Thats good to know.

Yeah, I was worried about that. But, I drove it in to town and ran some errands, and the brakes felt fine. So, if they got a little air in there, I can't feel it. Plus, Momma took it to choir and she had no complaints...so that means that it is for sure ok!
If you're still afraid of that switch, you can easily bypass it alltogether. Simply unplug it, install a jumper wire between the 2 wires, tape it up and you're done. The switch is redundant. It is normally closed, and will open when the brakes are depressed, killing the power to the cruise module. If your brake switch functions, it does the same. I have my Lincoln rigged this way and you'd never know any differance.
