It appears that a number of people have yet to get the word that there is a fire hazard under the hood of a bunch of Ford trucks and cars. If you have one of the vehicles on this list; Ford: Parts Now Available to Fix Faulty Cruise Control and have not yet gotten the correct wiring harness installed (the first ones were improperly made) GET TO THE DEALER ASAP. BUT FIRST DISCONNECT THE WIRING TO THE CRUISE CONTROL STITCH ON THE MASTER CYLINDER. Another fire was reported yesterday.
I just picked up a 2000 f150 with the 5.4. Took it to the local ford dealer and they installed the new harness, took about 5 minutes. The harness just adds a fusable link so if there is a short there is no chance of the brake fluid catching on fire (which has happened). This is the circuit that connects to the switch that turns the cruise off when you push the brake. If you just have a wire with a single connector connection to the master cyclinder from the harness you do not have the upgrade. If you see a connector on both sides of the harness (one connecting to the brake cylinder and one connecting to the main harness), then you have the upgrade.
I put a weather-proof fuse holder in line on the power lead to the switch. I've got a 5 or 2.5 amp mini-fuse in the holder. If it pops I can see it instead of trying to chase down a fusable link. I've had no problems with it and the cruise works flawlessly.
Oh well. Same thing as the factory. From all the info I've gotten from reading other threads they led me to believe it wasn't a removeable fuse. I just don't like the stealership under my hood.
yep thought it was a fusable link as well. The dealership just did the installation while the truck was in the service entry line so it just took a minute, guess they are doing quite a few of them.
