Handling/stability mod advice for 4x4 models

It is my understanding that front coil springs were added on the F250/350s for MY05. So, what I want to know is what have you guys with '05, '06, '07 and '08 trucks done to improve handling and stability over stock without impairing off road ability to any great extent.

Here's what I'm thinking for my '08 F250 FX4.

-Front dual stabilizer
-Rear sway bar

1. What brand would you go for the stabilizer?
2. Would you go for a rear stabilizer?
3. Would you add a front sway bar?
4. Will either the stabilizer or sway bar ruin my wheel articulation off road or will the difference be marginal?

I'm also planning on changing out the stock rotors for '08 F450 OEM big brakes. What is a reasonable price to pay for parts and fitment?

1. Icon Vehicle Dynamics is what I run on my 07 (be sure to remove the factory stabilizer and throw it in the trash):

Icon Vehicle Dynamics 2005-2008 FSD Dual Steering Stabilizer Bracket Kit - Steering Stabilizers - Truck Toyz Store
Hit the configure button to add the shocks.

2. If you want, if you haul big loads, camper, etc..

3. Comes with a front sway bar from the factory

4. Sway bar will limit it some, not like a stock SD articulates a ton to begin with.

5. I don't think that 05-08 F-450 brakes will fit on a F-250. The F-450s and 550s use a Super 60 front end as opposed to the standard Dana 60 on the 250 and 350. 450 and 550 are 10 lug vs. 8 lug on the 250 and 250.

Other options....upgrade shocks to Bilsteins if you keep it stock height.

The biggest thing for stability on these Superdutys is the shocks, in my opinion.

A rear stabilizer helps a lot, I put one in my '01, and it made a huge difference in handling, although it DOES increase the oversteer which you need to take into consideration.

But again, shocks are a BIG increase in stability.

Thank you for the informative reply. I know that cornering in a 4x4 rig is best attempted at a sedate pace, but I just want my long highway drives to be as smooth and controlled as possible and the same thing for on and off ramps.

My main question to you is that would you change out the '08 Rancho shocks on the F250 FX4 CC SB w/20s or are they up to the job? I searched and saw one member removed a set of Ranchos on an older model and was able to play them like an accordion- most disconcerting. I've had good luck with Bilsteins in the past but would like to avoid changing out the Ranchos unless you strongly urge I do so.

Dan thank you answering all of my queries. (1) I am definitely keeping the truck stock height so I'm guessing if you deem the Ranchos insufficient I should upgrade all four?

My main issue is ensuring I don't get the death wobble and it seems the dual front stabilizer is the best way to go. The one pictured on your truck looks great. (2)Would the rear stabilizer also help in your opinion even when empty or loaded ( I rarely tow but run one way with a fully loaded bed and the way back basically empty)

I spend a large amount of time at 70mph on the fwy and my second gen Tundra has bed bounce that makes things uncomfortable. I already have a deal with a local dealer for a new FX4 at 17k under list but I told them I'm holding out for $20-21k under. The relevance of this is that when I pull the trigger I will order through you so I'm just letting you know that it will be around late Dec-early January. Nearer that time I'll need your recommendations of a good installer since you're in TX.

(3) A final question regards the brakes. It seems that while the 20s can fit rotors of the 08 F450's size, other design differences will hinder their fitment to an F250. Who would you recommend? I looked and Brembo do not offer a kit. I want non cross drilled brakes of 14.5-15.5 inches.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Rachos. I feel Bilsteins are a better shock.

The rear sway bar will make a difference if you haul stuff in the bed.

In CA I know some guys hate the expansion joint spacing on the freeways in relation to the wheel base of the Super Duty trucks.

I'd have to check, but Boss Brakes and AP Racing may have something for the 08s.
Factory brakes are pretty good, upgraded rotors and pads would be even better.
Nice feature on the new trucks is the tow/haul mode when you are loaded, much better for braking.

The stock "Ranchos" are not, well, "Ranchos". I put 9000x's on my '01 and they were great. One leaked oil, still working out getting it warranteed.

You might be better off with Bilsteins
