EGR Flow and....

if I plug up the cooler at the y-pipe, and leave the EGR valve connected, will I get a CEL?
More specifically is there a exhaust flow sensor that measure the EGR flow? or is the flow implied by the EGR valve?
Moreover, when I block the flow to the cooler, will that mitigate the risk of a failed cooler??
I have a 1/2/03 with 74k miles and I'm planning on blocking the exhaust at the y-pipe to avoid cooler failure.

you have the round egr cooler and those hardly ever fail.

There are different kinds of EGR coolers? I learn something new every day around here!
What are the different kinds?
I have a May build 03, do I have the round cooler as well?
Thanks BTH.

So should I worry or not?
I use my PSD for towing my toy hauler and for long distance travelling and so far it hasn't leaked any coolant, but (and there's always a but) after reading all these threads I'm now worried about damage from a f-in cooler leak, and my warranty is long gone.

I've kept mine bone stock, but this years I've had three P0401 codes, which I assume that the EGR valve is all gummed up. I've never removed the damn thing but if I'm going to I might as well manage my time and block off the cooler as well??

Thanks BTH

i believe so jim but you can look and see to make sure.

glm, those early trucks throw egr codes easily due to the inferred ebp reading. if you have no lack or loss of power then dont let it worry you.

You will get a CEL, try unplugging the EGR valve and see what happens. If you don't get the CEL, then block the pipe and unplug the EGR valve. EGR is commanded by the PCM for operation. You will prevent the possible flash boiling of the coolant inside the EGR cooler preventing failure.

glm = Gil,
I don't experience any performace problems when P0401 occurs, so I'm happy.
Thanks BTH

Good point. I'll try that.
I would like to bypass the damn thing, but I'm hearing that California will begin smog checks, so I'd rather keep it stealth as much as possible.
