Greetings! I've been perusing this site for a while for info and found plenty. Now I need a little help in t/s-ing this bloody tranny. To start the vehicle is an '85 F-150,2wd, C6 and has a 302. The entire drivetrain has 69,xxx original miles. She shifted fine, nice and smooth; albeit quick (typical for this run as far as I have seen.) I recently swapped the vacuum modulator (yellow stripe), and yeppers, I remembered the tiny rod. Just yesterday, while accelerating from a stop, I noticed it seems to skips 2nd all together, and shifts to 3rd. When the pedal is depressed just a little bit, it down shifts directly to first, shifts to third and repeats until the truck is above about 40mph. When 2nd is selected with the lever, it acts like it's in neutral on a roll, and stays in first from a stop.
I checked the kick linkages and all is well, the shift link is good, and the fluid is good. I guess the burning question is, will adjusting the intermediate band fix it, or should I get the butter out because she's toast? Thanks in advance!
Ok, had the fluid flushed and screen cleaned, but it's doing the same thing. I attempted the intermediate band, and found it just goes all the way in. Good thing I indexed the adjuster to where I started. I wonder if one could replace the band without pulling the tranny?
It looks to be possible with a little filing on the case, but you'll probably get it open and find the block that fits onto the end of the band fell out.

Yes. There is an aftermarket band called a "snap band".
Remove the valve body, cut the end off the old band and slide the replacement in.
If the drum is scored life expectancy of the replacement will be less.

I actually figure you will find Jared is right on this one, that is the most likely cause of being about the screw the adjuster all the way in. It happens when the adjustment gets WAY to far out and allows to much slop when relaxed.
