Truth is a 400 is actually closer to a 429/460 then a 351C in most aspects. actually the cleveland heads which were taken from the 302 boss heads originally which was patterned after----- the 429/460 heads. The 400 is a diminutive version of the 429, same basic design for the heads (canted valves and the cants are similar) same thin wall casting method on the blocks, same design of oiling system (yes I think the 460 oiling system sucks too) plus uses the large 3" diameter main bearings like the 460 instead of the smaller Cleveland size, and even uses the same bell housing.
Hey monster,
I've never liked to make claims about Ford's engineering ideology or wtf Ford was thinking when they introduced a new motor.
The 400 may have used 3" mains like a 460 but those shells don't interchange like they will with a 351W. I run Windsor bearings in my 400 and a 351W dizzy with a C gear. I also have an Eagle 351W crank but that's another story.
I like the 400 for the role it plays and that is a high torque mid-sized V8. It does well against other 383-410ci motors of it's day. With todays technology, you really don't need cubic inches to win races. Current 6L LSx engines with turbos and N2O are deadly against big blocks.
That is my 460 and any one saying their 400 can kick a 460 butt is off base when comparing same spected motors. I`m waiting on a tranny rebuild before it goes in a 78 bronco. I`ve had both rebuit 351m and rebuilt 460 and cubes rule in a brick shaped truck, unless your going supercharger-nitrous. Tim knows his stuff but I`m not going there.
Besides the argument is really st"··$$%d, its not about with engine has the most output, its about the 400 being a great engine comparable to a 460, so anyone swapping a 400 for a 460 should think it over, thats how the discussion started in the first place. I have a 400 and i love it, if id have a 460 i would be in love with it the same...
