Hi there...just a quick question; After driving a 400 mile trip, I noticed that my hubs were locked in (must have forgotten to unlock them at some point) I don't have a locker or anything, so I don't see why that whould have hurt anything other than my fuel mileage. however, now when the hubs are locked in, it makes a rythmic clicking whenever the truck is moving (it does it irregardless of clutch position and engine speed, so that has nothing to do with it). I figured this to be U-joint problem, but how would I check this? thanks

Well u-joints usally squeak when they are bad....but if they are blown..you will hear a bunch of racket...clunking when you put it in drive to rev. and park. Clicking is probly not unheard of from u-joints but not the norm. I would check the hubs and see what condition they are in. My money, the noise would probly be somewhere in the hubs. You can check the joints by releasing the load on the drive train and wiggle the drive shaft by hand...should be no play except for the back lash in the gears. You can try the play in the Knuckle joints by raising one tire and locking in both hubs. Then try to turn the tire and see if there is any play in the joint. If not...your prob is probly not in the joints...you can also put the truck up on jack stands and put it in gear and run in 4WD. Can get to the prob real easy that way. well hope i helped.....

Thanks for the help...i will check the u joints today. Whats the best and easiest way to check the hubs for damage, proper opperation, etc.? Where I am living now, I have no way to use jackstands. Also...do you guys think I caused this with my recent trip with the hubs locked in? or is that meerly a coincidence?
Uh...man..well there is no telling....i wouldnt lock my hubs in for a long trip....well at least sustanined 65+MPH. BUT i dont think that would burn them up. What you can do it take the bolts out and look for any abnomalities(sp) of any kind. Like the spring... As of what to look for...i really dont know. I have Warn Prem's....and they were easy to figure out....just look at a manual showing the brake down of the hub and see if you match....that is as best as i can do....if any have any other info........

Thanks Dan...I discovered that it isn't the hubs. After doing a visual inspection, i found a tremendous amount of play in the rear u joint on the front drive shaft. So much so, that with each rotation, it shifts up and down creating more of clunk than a clicking noise. Not what I expected, but then when is it ever, right?
