Hey everyone. I have a 1994 f-150 300 6 4x4, and when I start my truck it usually idles really rough, like close to almost stalling. Sometimes it will just stall out. if it doesn't stall after a few seconds the truck will begin to run better and i was just wondering if this is the idle air control valve? that is what i am thinking but before i spend any money i just want to make sure. the truck only has about 42,000 miles on it.
I could be the IAC, get some carb cleaner or throttle body cleaner in a spray can, remove the intake plumbing and spray it liberally into the holes on either side of the throttle butterflies that lead to the IAC. Then start the engine and continue to spary it into the front hole until it makes the engine choke or stumble, this will exercise the IAC. keep doing this until the engine idles smoother.
Your problem could also be due to a weak ignition coil or plug wires, if you start the motor in complete darkness you will be able to see any arcing that is taking place as the motor is reved.
To check it out after the idle smooths out pull the plug off the IAC and if the idle slows down or the engine dies the IAC is OK.
Do not just clean the IAC to be cleaning it, if you do you may have to replace it.
Some you can clean and others as other posters have found out you can not and if you do then you have to replace the IAC.
You need to read your codes first and see what they are telling you before you do anything to the engine.
If you do not know how to read your codes go to one of these links below:
The CM codes will tell you about running problems and the KOEO will check out the sensors electrically.
The KOER test will check out the actuators operations (including the IAC) on the engine.
From what you say of your problem you may have a EGR valve stuck open, had one do the same thing the other day.
Do not spray any cleaner into the throttle body as this will remove the coating inside the throttle body. There should be a label on it telling you that.
