We have a 2000 XLS AWD with the 4.0 OHV. It will go down as one of the best vehicles we've owned. We bought it used in '03 with 22K. It now has 176K. The only repairs that have been made have been a battery, shocks and tires. I hope this doesn't jinx us, but it is still running strong and does not burn oil.
I was warned by a few folks not to get an AWD version, although no one could give a legitimate reason why other than opinion. I drive 150 miles round trip to work. AWD gas been great. It comes on when needed and you don't know it's there when not needed ... no fuss, no muss. When hunting I've had to used 4 High and 4 low a few times. No problems even with the street tires I use.
Mileage of late has been between 18-20 around town which is down from a consistent 20+ that used to be the norm. It will still obtain 23-24 on the highway.
The ride is great. It has plenty of room for typical duties. The appearance is holding up well. No rust or blemishes. No paint fade.
When the time comes to move on, I will look for 2000-01 model and hopefully find another decent one .
I know a few folks who have the current models (2002 - present). Each likes them very much, but say they do not get the mileage I get.
Likewise Uncle Tony, Alot of people here are claiming less MPG's than i get with my 00 5.0 AWD also.. I love mine and for what it is, I can't complain about the miles i get per fill up!
Also mine has needed very few repairs besides routine maintenance!
Love my 2002 Explorer rides great, decent mileage, hauls a lot with the rear seat down, & looks great, should get it back tommorrow from my 2nd fender bender, I think that I will keep it till it wears out & then get a newer one, love everything about mine.
