Fuel consumption

Hiya all,

Firstly i like to say i am new to both this forum and ford jeeps I have imported a 1996 V8 explorer to europe and enjoying it a lot. But i have 1 question.

I seem to drive about 320 miles on a full tank of gas and i wonder if my car is not just a tad more using then he should. I looked up some info on car test sites and what they said about fuel consumption and it seems to be less.

Anyone any ideas if i am wrong or that i may have to check some things?

Compared to my truck you are doing great. I get about 400 to 450 KM per tank in the summer down to 350 km/tank in the winter (I am pretty sure I need my intake manifold o-rings done, hopefully this will bring my winter mileage back into line).

There are several reasons for higher consumption in winter..

typically longer idling to warm up car while finishing up coffee.

Computer runs engine richer when it is cold; engine is cold longer in winter.

Everything is cold; wheel bearings, differential oil/s, tranny fluid, engine oil; cold thick lube requires more power to move.

Cold intake air is more dense, O2 sensor in exhaust will detect more O2 and think there is a lean condition and increase fuel to cylinders.

re: 320 miles/tank

I would say that is pretty normal for these V8s and vehicles. How much of it is highway driving vs. smaller roads?

320 miles on a tank of gas with a Explorer V8 is very good. I generally fill up before getting to 300 miles.

Bah this teaches me not to post before the coffee had its affect.

I meant 230 miles... (minor typo in the morning but big difference)

Yeah, that would make a difference If it is all city stop and go type driving then I would also not be suprised with that mileage (about what mine gets when I only drive it around town, 10-12MPG), if that is with highway driving then I would think it a bit low.

US EPA estimates for these vehicles were 14MPG city and 18MPG highway (at least that is what I recall at the moment). I also recall reading, when I was researching my 1997 mountaineer, that reviewers were not impressed with gas mileage on these and usually did not quite get to the EPA estimated numbers.

There is another thread in this forum where people have also posted their mileages as well.

I agree with K2, if it's mostly around town, 230 miles on a tank is not unusual especially if it's cold weather. Assuming you don't run your tank to empty that gives you 12-15 mpg about right for a V8.

That sounds like the mileage I'm getting with my 04 4.0 V6. Had I know the mileage would be like that I would have gone for the V-8!

In general, it's always best to get a V8!
