The compressor should work with 134a. It just needs all the oil and freon removed from the system. then a vacuum pulled on it and then charged with a 134a oil/freon charge. There is a kit sold at most stores that has everything including the fitting adapters to do this.
I wouldnt trust one of those do it yourself kits. Search over at the ac forum on here. Theres a couple things you want to change. I know for sure the air dryer is one and like saleen065 said you have to remove all the old oil out of the system because it doesnt get along with the 134a stuff. As for the compressor you can use the same one.
I just did the conversion on two differrent vehicles, my 1987 Saleen Mustang and my truck. I used the original comrpessor on both and it works fine. I changed nothing else.
I think that they have to replace the accumulator/dryer and the oriffice tube. They used to say that you had to change the lines because the 134 molecules are smaller, but changed that because the r-12 oil absorbed into the hoses creates a barrier so the 134 can't escape.
