I have a 1977 F150 400M C-6. Its a 4x4. it does just fine at 40 or 45 MPH. When I get it up to 55 or 60 MPH and the tranny has high oil pressure it starts powering out like it ran out of fuel. When I got the truck form a cousin the tranny had problems. I think it is the torque converter but i'm not sure. Any suggestions. I replaced the fuel pump about 3 months ago and replaced filters three times since.
the torque converter is a fluid coupler, it reaches vortex about 1800 rpm, which makes it direct drive[to a percentage] after that. it does not recognize rpm after this. have you seen a problem with the fuel filters when you changed them.
Start with simple stuff first check the air filter make sure its clean or $8 for a new one, spark plugs and wires, timing, vaccum advance. Check and see if it has a screen inside the carb where your fuel inlet hose barb threads in it may be varnished over and starving it at speed.

Silly question: Do you have two shifts? Worn linkage will result in the shifter reading D when it's in 2, which results in a doggy start and topping out at 55 or so.... Just a WAG.
