Please help a newbie. My 97 PSD 250 Ext cab 5-speed recently became difficult to shift and the clutch is starting to feel 'loose and soft' There is some oil leakage on the passenger side around the trans. and i'm not sure what is bolted on over there but it seems to have the most leakage. Putting it into 2nd and reverse is the worst, but something feels not right. Let me know your thoughts, it is my daily driver and I don't want to make anything worse by waiting. Thanks in advance for your help,
First the shifting..... There is a clutch bushing on the pedal linkage above the throttle pedal that is prone to failing. Most people replace it with a unit from Ebay that used a heim joint. That's a very common failure for our trucks. Poke your head under the dash and check it out. Remember, the clutch rod is not directly above the clutch pedals. It's above the throttle. You'll see what I mean.
Second, the oil leak. These motors have a drain hole in the bottom of the valley where the turbo, fuel pump, and fuel bowl sit. They all drain through that hole and it travels down the front of the tranny. Most likely your oil leak is on top of the motor. Hope that helps.
Hi, I am having the same problem with my clutch pedal linkage. The nylon bushing only lasts about 3 months before it breaks again ($10 to replace a
5 cent part) Right now the
joint is being held together with bailing wire. The aftermarket hiem joint
sounds like the right solution but I can't find it on Ebay or otherwise. Does
anybody have a source for these parts or perhaps another solution.
My 96 powerstroke and I thank you.

Hey,
Thanks, this is exactly what I needed, good-bye bailing wire -- hello working clutch. Finally a fix for Ford's miserable and cheap engineering. The first time that plastic insert failed I almost had a wreck. Since then I always
have the truck in neutral when stopped at a light or traffic. I will install
this this weekend and stop worrying. Great Job Forum!!
