Experts need your help again please.

As in last post I broke off the bolts to my thermostat housing. 4.9 L 6. I was unable to completely save the threads when drilling out. The original was threaded for 5/16 bolt. What I need to know now is what is the next size bolt to use now? And what size tap and drill bit do I use? Will a helicoil work so I could still use 5/16 bolt? Hope this makes sense. Thanks

If the hole isn't out round, you could buy a helicoil kit. They have the drill bit is bigger so the helicoil thread is the correct size.( if this makes sense?) That way you can use the stock bolt size 5/16..

Yes I was wondering about that. Will a helicoil hold securely or would going to the next size larger bolt be better?

Thank you both. I think I will go with the helicoil.

Well finally got it fixed. Bought the Helicoil kit. It only came with tap but no drill bit 21/64. I had to cut down the drill bit so I could get it and the drill into the engine compartment. After that all went well. Those Helicoils seem to be a good product and install fairly easy. Thanks for helping out.
