Talking Tanks in!

Well almost. I had to trim a little off each side of the lower frame rails to get it to slide in. All i have to do now is primer and paint the tank frame, Tank and the area i trimmed on the frame.

I followed the tech article to put the frame together:

And the end result:

I put a 69 Mustang tank in my 51 F1. I think its the 18 gallon or 19? I forget without looking up tanks online.
Dam sending unit was bad and leaked from the fuel outlet tube.

looks real nice, I did the same thing but think mine was from a 70 Mustang and think it was 21 or 22 gallons. Mine also was from Canada I got it from RockAuto, I scuffed it up a bit wiped it down with prepsol and painted it with POR15 to keep it from rusting.

Nice job Wiz

I bought my tank from Mustangs Unlimited through ebay. My tank is painted silver. It looks like plain steel but its paint. My 69 tank I opted for the fuel drain plug. I have used it three times already. I bought my sending unit off ebay over a year ago and forget where I bought it from.
Heres one tip spray undercoating on the top, that will cut down on the dirt and water setting on the steel.

I will be happy to get mine done. I keep pulling the fuel line and then I cant start the engine or make anymore progress tuning etc.

On the F1 I had to trim the frame away to make it fit. I moved the spare tire bar to add some extra strenght.
I had to clip my bumper brackets. I got it all done with my rear crossmember put in and saw the second bolts wouldnt work, so IM putting in one bolt and welding the back of my brackets. I had angle iron mounted where the second bolt would go for my spring swap.

Oldgreen mine came from Mustangs Unlimited also, It came with the sending unit, Rubber fill hose and has the drain plug.

I had to take just under 1/4 of an inch off the frame on each side to get this one in and it barely makes it past the spring perch bolts. I even had to trim the lip of the tank a little on the sides so it would fit past the bolts. Also as for the mounting bolts for the tank to tank frame there no problem in the front or back and the 4 corners but i can't put any in down the sides however i don't think that will be a problem.

Thanks for the tip! As it stands I'll do that and then paint it black most likely.

Hi Wiz,

Don't know if this came up or not but my tank did not have a vent line in it, I needed to add it. I put a vent in the tank and also one in the filler neck. It was very hard to fill without these vents.

I noticed that. With the filler door i'm using i'll be able to use a vented cap and was also going to run one off the filler neck.

IM using a plain old vented cap. I had this same fuel neck on a car and just swapped it to my F1. Now my car has a vented line (49 sedan)

I've seen somewhere a fill neck with a vent tube on it but being such a short distance from the tank to the bed it might not work to well.

wiz...

I've seen a couple of options for vents.... one was a short rubber tube that was routed up and attached to the crossmember just ahead of the tank...

another was same type rubber tube routed up inside rear fender well out of site... any thing you can do to get it up above the filler neck level will work I think..

later
John
