I always thought he was a down to earth kinda guy. He had a great talent unlike many in Hollywood today. He gave to many causes and started his foundation to help children with debilitating illnesses. Very much a gentleman that opted to stay out of the bs in Hollywood and have a private life in CT. It's cool to know and see where he got his start here in Wisconsin and the tiny little theater where he did it. Godspeed Mr. Newman, thanks for all you have done
He was married to Joanne Woodward for 50 yrs, Thats probably one of the longer running marriages in Hollywood.
Once, when asked why he had never strayed from his wife, he replied,"I have steak at home, why go out for a hamburger?"
He was most at home behind the wheel of a race car, which is amazing, considering his age. His "Newman's Own" brand was, and will remain, his legacy. All of the profits earned by the company are returned to the Newman Foundation charities.
Newman was nominated for an Oscar 10 times, he won an Oscar in 1986 for The Color of Money.
He also won many other awards, including the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1994.
And an Honorary Oscar in 1986 for his many memorable screen roles.
I am aware of this, but being nominated is not the same as winning. He played some really great roles, and did a hell of a job, but lost to someone else who did not perform as well. jd
A great guy! I enjoyed his movies and admired the way he handled himself. I remember catching a glimpse of him in the garage area at Daytona about 25 years ago and had to do a double take. Wow! That's Paul Newman! The guy is a class act. 50 years of marriage/ great humanitarian. RIP Paul.
