I have a 01 7.3 that i was drivin the other day and it just died out of nowhere and i cant restart it but it cranks like a champ. i tried a new cps but it didnt work anybody have any ideas.
02 Power Stroke, truck Just Died As I Was Driving, Was Running Low On Diesel, So Thought I Ran Out, But The Tower Was Still Full Of Fuel.
Will Not Start, But Cranks. Tested, But No Power To Inertia Switch, Or Fuel Pump. Thought I Would Ask If You Had Any Luck With Yours?
If the electrical checks out fine then look for a air leak in the fuel system. Most of the no run/no start problems with diesels that I have come across are the result of air getting into the fuel delivery system
I pulled my chip. Removed battery cables and let it sit overnight while the batteries charged. Next day I connected the batteries and turned the key on,let it just sit. The dome light will get dim and your radio display will start blinking rapidly. (Code blips) 18 or so blips, pause another 18-20 blips, pause another 9 or so blips then the blinking stopped and the dome light brightened way up. Keep repeating until it doesn't happen at all. (should be 10 or 11 times). The factory default codes should now be re-established and it should start. ( Barring any mechanical defects) Some techs will tell you to turn the key on for 20 seconds and then back off ten times in a row to re-set, but I have found it actually takes about 43 seconds each time. I had estimates of 2,000 to 3,500 for repairs and was appalled to find that the local techs didn't know as much about the trucks OBD etc. as I did. That may be why they need so much money to fix one. I have had these trucks since '84 and have never had an inexpensive or correct repair so I have just studied and learned to do it myself with the help of other 7.3 owners who have "been there, done that!" Good luck!
powerstroke586, does your wait to start (WTS) light come on when you turn the key on? Are there any other symptoms you can share with us when the truck died? Did it stumble, buck, act like it ran out of fuel, or act like someone just turned the key off? Do all of your dash lights function normally (come on and go off when they're supposed to). Is your engine oil topped off? When you pulled the evolution, did you set it back to stock, or just unplug the tuner?
well, my truck is down again. Did same thing, just died and won't start, cranks, but no start. Just thought I would check to see if you found out anything about yours.

Lot's of possibilities. I really do suggest you start a new thread down in the 7.3 section I gave a link to above. You're much more likely to get a response from someone who has been there done that, if you ask in the place where everyone else has the same motor.
When you start the new thread, be sure to describe how the truck died. Was it like it ran out of fuel, or like someone just turned the key off? Do you have power at the fuel pump & inertia switch this time (mention the bad chip from last time)? Are all your dash lights (glow plug light etc.) funcitoning normally? Also include your location in case there's a fellow FTE member close to you who will volunteer to help take a look, and possibly put a scanner on it for you.
neither one of my two code readers will read codes on this truck. Have tested them and they work properly. Driving. One sudden hard hiccup as I pulled into traffic.Seemed to be O.K. Five minutes later it just died. Once again no power to fuel pump. ck'd relays and fuses. Pulled cables. checked batteries. Everything seems to turning on except pump. Ck. engine light staying on. Inertia switch not tripped. no power to it though. power to fuel pump fuse o.k. Greenwood La. Glow plug light on dash and everything seems to function normally. Is there a sensor that sends info to the PCM or a keyless entry anti theft mode that will shut down fuel pump?? . Got some more testing to do. Any tips appreciated. I cannot figure out why my OBD2 reader wont read the codes.
I have tested all the wires while batts. disconnected. all test good.
Do you hear the fuel pump buzzing when you first turn the key on? Does your glow plug light or wait to start light come on and go off like normal? The first thing that comes to mind with a hiccup is the CPS unit. The second thing is a possible chaffing issue on the main engine wiring harness. Too bad our timing is off. I was in Longview 2 weeks ago and would have stopped by and looked at it for you.
Is there any way I can convince you to Click Here and then hit the button at the upper left corner of the thread listing and go ahead and start your own thread about this. That way you can get other folks opinions with the 7.3 than just mine.
