1997 4.0 explorer.
I am replacing the intake manifold gasket. I have taken the old gasket out. The air ports(not sure of their real name), have a lot of carbon build up. What is the best way to clean them? looking at the old intake manifold gasket how can I tell where it was leaking? One side(left to right) of the gasket is real dark the other side is pretty light.

Cleaning intake manifold
After removing manifolds from truck I sprayed them with an organic oven cleaner, set aside for about an hour then blasted them with a power washer. They came out looking new.
