F600 help

My cousin is that person in your family that has no problem dragging home stuff others don't want. this time he drug home a 1974 Ford F600 that is missing the engine and hood. I have the VIN number, but can't find a decoder to tell me what the truck came with for an engine. Anyone know if there is a decoder available for the large duty trucks like this? Anyone know what these trucks came with for engines. The transmission is in the truck and is definately a big block, but it could be anything. Any help would be great
Thanks
Matt

I bet its a FE bolt pattern, all those trucks got 352's 361's and 391's. So whatever was in it could be repalced with a 360/390/427/428 if you so wanted to.

The engine code is the 4th digit of the VIN.

1974 F600 Engines: B = 300 I-6.

FT V8 (not FE!) engines: C = 330 2V M/D / D = 330 2V H/D / E = 361 2V / F = 391 4V.

Post the VIN, I can decode the rest of it, and all the codes from the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face, below the latch.

NO: 352/360 or 390 engines were installed in anything larger than an F350!

I have one to add to the list of engine possibilities. I have a '73 f600 with a factory 359cid. It was a former uhaul truck. I love it because it's an oddball engine but it drives the parts guys nuts when you tell them what it is. I know what will fit it from the other FT engines but it's fun to mess with them a little.

A 359 is nothing more than a 361 with low compression heads and is detuned for smog emissions.

The same thing holds true for the 389, which is a 391 with low compression heads.

According to the 1973/79 Ford Heavy Truck Parts Catalog (where those VIN engine codes I listed above came from), neither of these engines were available till 1976 on anything.

So a 359 in a U-Haul F600 from 1973, has undergone an engine swap.

What is your trucks VIN engine code?

F60 = F600 2WD

K = 477 4V

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant

X42501 = 1975

What is your trucks VIN engine code?

I'll have to check the vin when I get a chance, the truck is being stored at my buddys place at the moment. You're right about the 359 being a low compression 361 but not sure about the years. In the few references I have found over the last few years about the 359hd all say it was made for the 1974 model year only for uhaul type trucks. Supposedly the low compression wasn't so much for emissions as it was to let it run on crap gas and keep your average family driver from blowing it up on the highway.

Sorry guys, for some reason I never got any email reminders to check this and completely lost track of it. The truck is long gone as of now, so I no longer have the VIN. Thanks for the replies though. Sorry I didn't get back to any of you.
