E4OD rebuild and upgrade
All,
I have a 1990 F-350 4 x 4 with the 460. I am swapping in a Cummins but that is only half the battle. The current Gen1 E4OD has 150,000+ miles and definitely will not hold up to the increased torque and horsepower. plus, it is slightly slipping and is due rebuild anyhow. Here is my problem.
There are plenty of manufacturers who rebuild them but they also have to have a stand alone computer for them as they utilize PWM, which my factory OEM computer does not have programmed into it.
I can rebuild it to work with the factory computer (non-PWM I believe) but I have to spend $$$ just to get it to 4R100 standards before I can upgrade to extra clutches and shafts. Then I have to change the solenoids to work with my computer.
Is there a better way to do this? Is there a year of 4R100 that was non-PWM that has all the heavy duty upgrades the E4OD does not that I can get out of a junkyard and then rebuild that? Or, do I have to go with the hard way and build from the bottom up on my original tranny?
The desired end state is all available upgrades to the transmission while I am doing this project while still maintaining my original computer's functionality. I have had one person say that all I have to do is take a newer 4R100 and swap solenoid packs. I am no transmission expert so I am asking a lot of questions, especially about the PWM versus non-PWM issue.
There are so many mods it is hard to tell what to do (extra clutches, shift kits, power valves, pump upgrades, shafts, planetaries, center support, drainback valve and line mods....) the list is endless! Can anyone tell me the best way to go about this? Thanks in advance. BTW, my wife cannot drive a stick worth a crap so that conversion is out of the question as I deploy in the Army (currently am in Afghanistran) and she uses it for errands.
