U joint replacement question?

Got a 2000, 3.0, short bed, manual trans and need to change out the rear U-joint. I know I need to drop the driveshaft but never done that. I can remove the 4 bolts connecting the rear spider to the rear transfer case. Obviously the shaft will be able to be lowered to the ground. How do I remove it from the front side? Just pull it back?? If I do that, won't fluid come out? Is the front side splined and do I need to worry about lining up the front side splines exactly? I know to mark the rear for proper balance alignment, but just a bit confused about the front.

Thanks in advance!

I've not changed one on a Ranger, but on all the trucks I've done, I just slide the front half of the shaft out of the rear of the transmission. It is splined but I've never had issues getting it back on. If you make the shaft back by the rear end you should be able to put it right back on. The rear seal is to keep dirt and such out, not to hold fluid. The shaft slides back and forth under torque. The seal is further forward around the spilne. Hopes that helps.

Drain your fluid-remove the 4 bolts on the rear diff-mark the connection with a punch or liq. paper for re-install, for proper balance-you will need a large vise to push out the spider and for re-install

If it's a Super Cab you'll need to remove the carrier bearing bolts from the crossmember as well. One tip on these lightweight Ranger driveshafts. When pressing the bearing cups only press them out far enough where you can grasp the cup with a channel lock or similar type tool. Then press the other side out the same and remove the cross. On older car/trucks with much larger driveshafts and u-joints I would press straight through. I did this with a Ranger driveshaft and distorted the driveshaft end and did not know it. After reassembly and driving I had created a severe vibration. I actually squeezed the driveshaft opening together by .015", enough to create a major vibration issue. I then paid $140 to fix the driveshaft and balance it.

Thanks guys for your help here. With your help and the help of these very good ehow clips, it shows you exactly what needs to be done, even for the novice. The only thing that I ran into was that the local Advance Auto shop replacement u-joint supposedly for my manual trans came with mismatched bushings (2 one size, 2 slightly bigger). Thought it was a misque, but every box they had had the same thing. Ended up putting in the u-joint for the automatic which had the correct size bushings.

There are too many clips, but each is well done for the novice w/ some great tips for the handyman also. Bookmark this one!
