hi,ive been reading abit and have some newb questions.I have a 2000 f250 sd 4x4 with a k&n intake, 4"straight exhaust and superchips tuner and when pulling hills i hear the wastegate pulsing i guess would be the best way to describe it.is this bad or can i simply pull the hose on the wastegate to stop it?it happens when i pull my toyhauler that weighs in about 12,000lbs.i have a ton more questions about mods but i'll ask later.thanks for any advice.
Welcome, what your hearing is surge from the turbo. It's a comon problem with the stock turbo. There are a few fixes, wicked wheel, ats comp housing and then there are complete turbo upgrades. Most go with the wicked wheel because it's cheaper. Keep searching with those first two and you'll see.
Extended periods of surge will destroy the turbo. So look at investing in a WW or an ATS housing soon. In the meantime, downshift to get the RPM's up and to take it out of surge range.
thanks guys i was thinking the wastegate was getting soft.I've been thinking about getting a garret ball bearing turbo to replace the stop one,is that worth doing?

Depends on your future mods. How far do you plan to go on power?
not real far as power goes, just when there is a problem i fix it with something better.i also want to be able to drag my toyhauler around without hassel.i am searching for info on the "do it yourself" mods, but i figure the chip, exhaust, freebie mods and fixing the turbo surge will be about it until i get another rig for towing.

You and I think alike!!!!
The BB turbo works just fine as a stock replacement. I just was asking how far you planned to go on power because a $1600 turbo is not what most people throw in to simply replace a stock unit, unless they plan to make more power over just the standard chip or tuner. But it is a good turbo and I like mine. I've had it for almost 2 years now.
The stock turbo is also not a bad unit. It's very strong, just that it surges when you add power. The WW fixes most surge issues and is one of the cheaper fixes. You can still get surge with it, but it's much harder to do. The ATS housing will completely eliminate surge, but it costs more than the WW.
So it's your choice on what you want to go with. WW cost will be about $75, ATS housing is around $400, and a new BB turbo is $1600+.
