i'm missing the transmission kickdown linkage on my 70' f-100 with a 302 and c-4 auto. At least I think it's a linkage. I've never seen one, and can't find anything in the usual parts places. My chilton's book does'nt even give any info about what's supposed to be there. Any ideas?

A Chilton manual is not a Ford shop manual nor a parts catalog, so you cannot expect it to have specific illustrations of this linkage, or anything else.
The entire setup is illustrated here: 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration / Section 97 / Page 24.
DOTZ7A187F .. Kickdown Rod-22" long / 1/2" diameter rod / Fits: 1970 F100 302 C4 / 1971 F100 302 C4 before serial # M00,001.
This part is obsolete, no dealer or obsolete parts seller has a new one.
btw: You can buy a CD version of this parts catalog from hipoparts.com.
Bill you are gonna have to chew your tongue pretty hard to keep from sploding, so start biting.
The kickdown rods are fairly generic looking hollow alum tubes. They all reach the side of the tranny to the top of the engine and have adjustment in them. I have several and if you were close by I would be happy to give you one, but I aint about to package and mail one.
Don't have any idea if any of your left coast buds might have one that they would give you.
Find yourself one or two, put it in place and bend it a little if needed and make it work.
You can make one out of 1/2 tubing. But it would be best if you say how one was bent. Basicly it attaches to the carb linkage (or bracket) and runs down the back of the engine to the transmission. The ends are flattened and have a hole to fit the pivot points. I had to make one for my 68 when I changed manifolds. Since I had access to a machine shop I made by pivot points out of brass and soldered them into the tubing.
Bill you are gonna have to chew your tongue pretty hard to keep from sploding, so start biting. No teeth, wear dentures, and I nevah wear them on this or any other site when typing this chit, or I'd be tongueless by now!!

sorry Bill That's OK John, I know you mean well, you old *&(&(^!!!

Parts catalog is specific on the length and curvature of the various kickdown rods.
The one called for here is 22" long.
There are others that range in length from 19" to 48" long.
The FE's are 34" long.
How is a 34" or 27" rod gonna work in place of a 22" rod?
I guess one could cut it down, but how would they know where to cut it due to the different curvatures?
It takes a lotta time and effort on my part to research and type all this crappola.
I don't see anyone else on FTE, Slick 60's, or any other Ford truck site dumb enough to do it.
I go by what the parts catalogs state. Not by guesswork or "I read it somewhere" or "some pinheaded cluck told me it would work!"
Bill may know different, but I can't see how they would be model specific for most installs. A C4 attached to a 302 is a C4 attached to a 302 in every vehicle place in. I know the E series has some issues but we are talking F series here. IMHO

Bill I gotta pose a question, your post states, "1965/72 F100/350 352/360/390 Kickdown Rods" Did the C-O-M use a kickdown? I can't recall, but I can recall that there were no C6s for the early years listed, and no C-O-Ms for the later.
I will give you a chance to redeem yourself, but it appears there is some mixing of apples and oranges in this box. NO?????????
1965/72 F100/350 352/360/390 Kickdown Rods. The following was taken directly from the parts catalog, and are the listings for all the F100/350 kickdown rods used on FE engines from 1965 thru 1972.
I assumed that you would know which trans was used with what kickdown rod.
Here's the info, anyway.

Well yes, BUT SanFORDf100 asked about a C4 connected to a 302.
How did we get so far off the main road??
John
Hmmm...I wonder...
Well....you made a comment in post #10 that basically said there were no specific kickdown rods, and as you can see from that list I typed above as an example, according to Ford, there certainly was.
I used the FE's as an example because just look at that crazy list of kickdown rods. SEVEN different rods just for 1967/72's FE's alone!
