Okay, I'm curious. I haven't asked my saleslady yet, but I am dying to know ... wouldn't a 4x4 dually really be a 6x6? I mean, doesn't the designation mean wheels x drive wheels? Any history or anecdotes about this?
Chevy was the first to put this on there trucks 6x6 as a sticker i dont think that id have that on a truck because the pourpose of the "dual" rear wheels is to take the heavyer weight and to spread it out. each dual wheel is being drivin by the same axle so in my opinion its not a true 6x6 everytime i see this sticker on one of those god ugly chevs i just laugh
What I consider a true 6x6 is an older M38A (I think), these have three drive axles with either single or dual tires on the rear ones. I think your terminology (4x4 Dually) is proper. Just my opinion though!
Okay - I wanna see an 18 wheeler "tractor" ... just kidding.
I know you mean tractor-trailer rig.
But I thought with two axles on a semi tractor (8 drive wheels) is considered a twin-screw. I don't think those rigs are ever labeled like 4 wheelers are.

The numbers in the configuration are the number of "wheel sets" not the actual number of wheels. A "wheel set" is a group of wheels at one end of an axle whether that group of wheels includes one, two, three... wheels. A pair of dual rear wheels is considered one "wheel set". Thus, a truck with a single rear axle dual rear wheels and a front driving axle is a 4x4, not a 6x6.
I think to make this easier....
a 2 wheel drive truck is a truck...
a 4 wheel drive truck is a 4X4...
a 2 wheel drive duelly is a truck...
a 4 wheel drive duelly is a 4X4...
6X6 ?
what the hell are they thinking.
I have been wheelin sence I was 7 years old, and I have never, never seen a 4 wheel drive duelly truely "wheel" they are tooo long and tooo wide in the back.
they are great for pulling a horse trailer, sand rail, hay and cab over campers, but you lift it and put big tires on it and you have a little boys stand next to it washed every day not a scrach or ding daddy probably paid for it as a graduation gift worthless hunk of metal, no matter who made it.
sorry oh great FORD god. please forgive me for stating the truth.
Jez....6X6? come on folks think about it, duh. please do not take this wrong I don't mean this to make anyone sound dumb, it just the way I feel.
TECHNICALLY, very technically, its a 6x6, but you can't really call it one because theres still only two axles. So, basically, its not, its a 4x4, i wouldn't call it a 6x6, because your calling it something its really not.
How about this to add to the mix. If the dually doesn't have locking or limited slip differentials, get it stuck and and it's a 6x3. Or 6x2 however you want to look at it.
