Can someone tell me if there's a difference between 4x4 Dually rims and 2x4 Dually rims from 1980-97 Fords? I understand that 4x4 Dually didn't come from factory and were usually conversions.
IF someone performs a conversion will the 2x4 wheels fit?
I've seen pics where people have used the 2wd pickup wheels and placed 235 tires on them. They claim they fit because they look and see enough space between the tires up high.If you look at 235 tires on a drw pickup with the oem 2wd rims and look down low where the tires bulge out a bit,in my opinion it's just too close. Now load up heavy and that bulge in each tire grows more, closing in on the little gap left.If the tires touch under load........boom.There goes expensive tire and potentially a fiberglass dually fender.
If I wanted to run 235's I would buy a set of the 4wd dually rims to get the greater offset. If Ford didn't think there was a need for greater offset rims for 4wd cab and chassis trucks that run 235's,then they probably wouldn't of made the rims.
I run 235's on my '96 2wd F350 Dually.......The bottoms of the tires are closer than I would like but I have never seen them completely touch. This truck is set up as a service truck and weighs in at 14,000 lbs "empty".......If I hook up to a trailer and haul something, that weight goes up in a hurry...... I run 80 PSI in the rear tires so that may help some too. Tire life with the 235's seems to be longer than with the 215's .......I was using a set of 215's up about every 30-35,000 miles ........and was buying good tires......not just the cheapest thing that was round and black............
