Hey folks. Im about to start gathering the pieces for my first build. As of right now I have a freshly machined D1AE-6015 block bored 30 over, and some Speed Pro forged pistons (L2446F) with a slight dish. Piston specs show I should be around 9:1 with 64cc heads. For a crank Im looking at a Scat cast steel with standard stroke and Eagle SIR I Beam rods. For heads Im looking at either going with some GT 40X Turbo Swirls or sending some E7TE that I have to get worked over at Power Heads.
Im not sure what cam Im going to run yet but Im thinking about a 650 carb and a nice low rise dual plane manifold.
So how does this combo sound to you guys? And anybody have any advice or suggestion? The motor is going in my 79 F100 2WD pre-runner and Im looking mostly for low to mid power with good street manners and reliability. Thanks!!!
You're on the right track. Unless your rods and crank are trashed you could save a lot of money by using the stock pieces. Windsor crank and rods are good for well OVER 500 horsepower. If you invest in good aluminum heads you won't regret it.
I thought about using the stock crank and rods but the truck is running right now and I still drive it around town once in a while. The motor is pretty tired and has low oil pressure which is why Im doing the build. I want to build the new motor on the stand and then swap it in once its built. I figure since Im sarting from basically scratch, I might as well spend a little extra money for some new (and a little stronger) bottom end components. Mostly just for piece of mind. Im guessing my HP should be in the mid 300 range with the combo Im planning but I might spray it just for fun.
The plan is good but forget using the stock heads.. they're WAY too small for the projected power levels, you need 250+cfm from the heads to get into the 350+ hp range, if you do manage to squeeze that much from them the water jacket will be paper thin and not reliable. The only thing the 351 bottom end needs for 500hp reliability is better rods and bolts and it sounds like this is your plan anyway.
Those don't flow an better than the PowerHead E7's, so unless you can buy a set and get them ported for what a set of Dart Iron Eagles would cost($1100-1300) it's not cost effective IMO. The Ford X303, AFR 185, and TFS Twisted Wedge are other options but are more expensive as well.
Ok thanks. I'll check out those other heads. I must have gotten confused because I thought the GT40X "Turbo Swirl" were X303. They say they are a 65hp bolt on.
Ok, just looked on the Scoggin Dickey website and they show the GT 40X Turbo-Swirl heads having the # X303. Think its a miss print?
Damn.. Ford has too many different part numbers and common names that get interchanged. At one time the GT40x was just another step up from the GT40p head, but now there are a whole new X series that appear to flow more than any of the previous models. You want to find out how old the heads are on that web site, if they are the recent X303 then they are a decent option, but if they are older versions then they don't compare. A version of the GT40x appears in the chart below, the X303 isn't listed in this one but info from the Ford performance site would seem to indicate they are closer to the AFR165 in flow capacity.
