Hello all, new to the site, used to lurk before but now I dont have to cause I finally bought a new superduty. Anyway I am breaking it in per the manual from ford and the threads I have found here. My question is I know you're not supposed to tow the first 500 miles and I should have exactly that before I have to make my first tow, a 7,400 pound bumper pull camper trailer, going Elk hunting ,should I change the oil at all prior to my first tow or will I be allright and when I get back should I change the oil? Also what additives are you using in your tank. Thanks for the info, rookie diesel owner so I will have more future questions
I pulled a boat about 6500lbs right at 500 miles on the truck and it did great. I changed the oil the first time at about 2700 miles and no issues. I don't use any additives either. I have a job 1 with 7000 flawless miles so far.
As far as additives for your tank most diesel sold, especially ULSD, has only a cetane of 40. Think of cetane with diesel like octane in gas. Along with Ford's recommendation of running at least 45 cetane, the cetane boosters add lubricity to the fuel injectors and other parts of the fuel system which ULSD is lacking because of the reduced sulfur. A good cetane booster, such as Power Service, is always good for your system. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks everyone for the input. As far as the additives, am I safe using them right away or is there a minimum amount of miles I should have before using?
You can use the Ford Motorcraft centane booster with the Motorcraft additive for the winter they can mix. I run both in the winter never had problem. The red and blue bottles for your dealer.
I run Motorcraft as well. I've been using it in my 07 since new and will do the same for my new 09 when it arrives. The longest I run the factory oil is 1000 miles. I run oil analysis on all my oil changes and that first one is real nasty, full of sand from the casting and metals.
