4x4 problems

4x4 problems
I've posted this in the explorer section here but no replys. You guys know your stuff so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
My brother has a 1997 Explorer. He just called me, said his 4x4 and LOW light are flashing on and off every five minutes. He pulled into a parkin lot, put it in 4 wheel and he said the car seemed like it didnt wanna move (like somethings binding up??) and he could hear a noise.
The switch is just one of those little ***** on the dash.
I haven't gotten to see it yet but do you guys have any ideas?

The LOW light flashes randomly? Is there a problem when he's driving and it flashes?
It seems that its not disengaging, or that its not COMPLETELY disengaging.
