I posted this up in the Explorer section, but what the heck some of you guys here may know the anwer or have experienced a similar problem. Heres the exact post:
My brothers got a 1997 Explorer. He just called me said his 4x4 and LOW light are flashing on and off every 5 minutes. He said he went into a parkin lot, switched the switch to 4 wheel and it would not move forward and he could hear a noise.
I havent gotten my hand on it but anybody got some ideas?
I dont think its the switch because why would he hear a noise comin from under the car? He described it as the car didnt wanna go forward, like something was jammed up holdin it from goin forward.
You guys could be right, I've never had problems with any of my 4x4's so I have zero experience with fixin them
Have it scanned, there are many codes that can be stored for the ESOF
Electric Shift On the Fly
Shift motor is located on the back of the transfer case.
Try carefully smacking it when the switch is activated,
if it works the motor/sensor is bad.
Axle windup is another problem.
Have him roll the truck to a stop, wheels straight ahead, in neutral w/o the brakes.
Before it comes to a complete stop shift it.
This relieves most of the pressure on the driveline.
I've replaced 10-12 of the shift motors, pretty common failure...salt and mud kill them.
It has a sensor built into it that turns on the 4x4 lights on the dash + other functions.
I've had a some success with cleaning the contacts in the sensor.
Removing the motor can be a little tricky, one of the wires is not in the electrical connector (see one stray wire in pict)
I usually just cut and splice it back on rather than remove the pin/socket.
Thanks for the advice cuda, how much do they usually run?
Last one I bought was around $70
Try cleaning the contacts first it may save you some $$
With the shift motor removed you can see if the drive cog is rotating.
That will tell you the motor itself may be OK.
