4x4 problems

My brothers got a 1997 Explorer. He just called me said his 4x4 and LOW light are flashing on and off every 5 minutes. He said he went into a parkin lot, switched the switch to 4 wheel and it would not move forward and he could hear a noise.

I havent gotten my hand on it but anybody got some ideas?

This usualy indicates that the shift motor has lost its location, sometimes disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes resets, if not there is a repair routine that you need to complete
